Luigi Games

Luigi, Mario’s brother, known from the Super Mario Bros. games, should be familiar to everyone. However, not only Mario has his own games, but also his brother Luigi, although they are significantly fewer. The most well-known Luigi games are likely the Luigi’s Mansion series, which is our main focus today. But Luigi also appears as the main character in other games, which we will discuss shortly. Let’s start with Luigi’s Mansion.

Luigi’s Mansion is a ghost game. Here, Luigi takes on the role of a ghost hunter and must free the huge mansion from ghosts. The first game in this series was released in September 2001 for the GameCube. This game was developed by Nintendo EAD and received a port for the 3DS in 2018.

In 2013, Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, also known as Luigi’s Mansion 2, was released. This game is the sequel to the first part, and familiar characters reappear, but more on that later. In this game, which was released in 2013 for the Nintendo 3DS, you free a total of 5 mansions from ghosts. This game is also getting a remake for the Nintendo Switch this year, but we’ll talk about that a bit later.

In 2015, an arcade version was released for the second part of the series. In this arcade, you held the weapon from the game as a controller and experienced everything in first person.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 is the latest part of the series. It was released in 2019 for the Nintendo Switch. In this game, Luigi must visit a hotel run by ghosts. On each floor of the hotel, you encounter different and new ghosts and puzzles.

However, there were also some other games where Luigi was the main character. The first game with Luigi in the lead role was Luigi’s Hammer Toss. This game was released in 1990 on the Game Watch, a watch on which you could only play this game. This game is similar to Super Mario Bros. 2.

Mario is Missing

In 1992, Mario Is Missing! was released. In this game, as the name suggests, Mario is missing, and you have to find him as Luigi. This game was released in 1992 on PC, Macintosh, and SNES. In 1993, a port for the NES was also released.

In 2013, New Super Luigi U was released for the Wii U. This was actually a DLC for New Super Mario Bros. U, which could be purchased in the Nintendo eShop. However, it was also possible to buy the game alone in stores.

The last game dedicated to Luigi is Dr. Luigi from 2013/2014. It was released in America on December 31 and in the rest of the world on January 15. This game was exclusively released for the Wii U. It is a puzzle game where you have to stack lines similar to Tetris. However, there are some small missions you have to complete as a player.

What is Luigi’s Mansion?

Today we mainly want to focus on the Luigi’s Mansion series, so let’s first clarify what Luigi’s Mansion is about. To introduce the gameplay a bit, we have to briefly talk about the story of the first game. The first part starts with Luigi winning a mansion in a contest he didn’t even enter. He wants to meet Mario there to get his mansion, but neither is Mario there, nor is the mansion as described. Luigi decides to enter the mansion alone and is immediately attacked by a ghost. He is saved by a scientist trying to suck up the ghost with a vacuum cleaner, which becomes iconic for the series.

In the mansion, Luigi has to solve various puzzles, unlocking new areas of the mansion. However, the ghosts won’t leave Luigi alone, but with the help of the vacuum, the “Poltergust 3000” (which in later parts becomes the “Poltergust 5000” or “Poltergust G-00”), Luigi can defend himself. To catch a ghost, Luigi must first blind it with his flashlight and then suck it up with his Poltergust.

Additionally, there are some collectibles in the mansion, such as coins or jewels, which give you more points. The puzzles in the game are very varied. To solve them, you must carefully observe your surroundings and use different tools.

The game features various types of ghosts. Besides the regular ghosts, which are not very challenging, there are also Portrait Ghosts. These ghosts are much stronger and are trapped in paintings. These ghosts have different abilities and must be defeated in special ways. Once you defeat them, they peacefully return to their paintings in the mansion. At the end of each section of the mansion, there is also a boss, who is particularly powerful.

The atmosphere of the game is slightly creepy but perfectly combines this with some humor, making the game suitable for younger players as well. Throughout the game, you can further upgrade your Poltergust and receive new tools, making ghost hunting even more fun and easier.

Story of Luigi’s Mansion

You already know most of the story of the first part, but let’s go through it again quickly. Luigi thinks he won a mansion, Mario is not there, he wants to find him, goes into the mansion, and surprise, it’s full of ghosts. In the mansion, Luigi meets Professor E. Gadd, who saves him with the Poltergust 3000, a kind of vacuum cleaner. Luigi gets to keep the Poltergust 3000 and starts searching the mansion for his brother Mario. After defeating many Portrait Ghosts and bosses in the mansion, you find out that the evil ghost King Boo is behind Mario’s disappearance. Now you must defeat him at the end of the game to save Mario.

Story of Luigi’s Mansion 2 / Dark Moon

In Luigi’s Mansion 2, you are once again asked for help by Professor E. Gadd. The peaceful ghosts of Evershade Valley have become aggressive. This happened after King Boo shattered a magical artifact, the Dark Moon, which had made the ghosts peaceful. Now it’s your job to find the pieces of the Dark Moon and calm the ghosts. The pieces are scattered across five different mansions, all of which you have to search. Each mansion is filled with puzzles, aggressive ghosts, and boss fights. At the end of the game, you must again face your old enemy King Boo to restore the Dark Moon and secure peace in the valley.

Story of Luigi’s Mansion 3

In Luigi’s Mansion 3, Luigi, Mario, Princess Peach, and some Toads are invited to a luxury hotel called Last Resort. But shortly after their arrival, it turns out that it was all a trap by King Boo. He traps each member of the group in a painting, except Luigi, who manages to escape. Now Luigi must navigate through the different floors of the hotel to rescue his friends. With the help of the new Poltergust G-00 and his helper Gooigi, a doppelganger created by Professor E. Gadd, Luigi must fight a variety of ghosts and bosses. Each floor of the hotel presents new challenges and enemies. The final boss is, of course, King Boo. On the top floor, you must defeat him in an epic showdown, freeing all your friends and escaping the hotel.

Developments in Game Mechanics

The games Luigi’s Mansion 2 and Luigi’s Mansion 3 offer several new features compared to the first part. In the second part, there are a total of 5 mansions, each with different themes and challenges. Additionally, there are now missions in the various levels, such as defeating certain enemies or solving puzzles. As mentioned, you also get an upgraded version of the Poltergust, the Poltergust 5000. This allows you to catch stronger ghosts and do much more.

It is no longer enough to simply shine the flashlight on the ghosts to blind them. You must use the Strobe Flash function, which makes the flashlight flash brightly, blinding and weakening the ghosts. Additionally, a Dark-Light feature was introduced, allowing you to reveal invisible objects, adding new puzzles to the game. The most significant change is the introduction of a multiplayer mode. Here you can explore a tower full of ghosts with up to 4 players, working together to defeat the ghosts and solve puzzles.

The third part offers a different setting, a hotel full of ghosts. Here, you will encounter many floors, each with a different theme. Your weapon has been upgraded to the Poltergust G-00, which has many new functions. With the Slam, you can slam ghosts to the ground, the Suction Shot allows you to remove shields or other objects, and the Burst lets you weaken whole groups of ghosts at once.

The most significant addition is Gooigi, a slimy doppelganger of Luigi. He can pass through tight spaces and ignore dangerous obstacles like spikes or water. In single-player mode, you can switch between both characters, or you can play the campaign in co-op mode, with each player controlling one of the two characters. The new character also makes the puzzles more challenging, requiring skillful cooperation between the two characters. The new features of the Poltergust G-00 are also frequently used.

Besides the co-op mode, there is also a multiplayer party mode. In this mode, you can complete a series of competitive mini-games with up to 8 players. This mode is called the ScareScraper mode.

The boss fights have also been improved. They are more challenging, with each boss having unique attack patterns and moves. To defeat them, you must use different abilities of the Poltergust or Gooigi. The graphics have also significantly improved with the switch to the Nintendo Switch. The characters and environment are depicted much more vividly, enhancing the gameplay experience.

Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD Remake

The second part of the Luigi’s Mansion series will get an HD remake for the Nintendo Switch on June 27, just a few days away, under the name Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD. In this remake, the graphics are updated to meet Nintendo Switch standards. This was urgently needed as the original version ran on the 3DS. The textures of the environment and characters have been improved, enhancing the atmosphere in the various mansions.

The controls have been optimized and improved for the Joy-Cons, and the touchscreen in handheld mode will be used in certain stages. There are also several quality-of-life improvements. The menus and interfaces have been optimized, and the save and load times reduced. The story and core mechanics of the game remain unchanged. However, there are some new challenges to keep the game from getting boring too quickly. The multiplayer mode will also be available again.
