The F1 series, as the name suggests, is all about Formula 1. Formula 1 is the biggest racing event in the world with over 100 million viewers. Naturally, this makes it perfect for a video game, leading to the creation of the F1 games. Here, you race against famous Formula 1 drivers. Alternatively, you can compete in exciting online races against other players.
F1 Games
The F1 games have been around for over 20 years. It all started in the year 2000 with F1 2000, which was released for the PlayStation and PC. However, it wasn’t the only game released in 2000. F1 Championship Season 2000 was also released for PC, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, Gameboy Color, and later even for Mac OS X. F1 Manager for the PC also came out in 2000. In 2001 and 2002, the games F1 2001 and F1 2002 were released, aligning with the racing seasons. These games no longer appeared on the PlayStation, but on PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC instead. The current drivers were always integrated into the games, which were also developed technically.
In 2003, F1 Career Challenge was released for PC, GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox. However, there was a long break until 2009. From 2009 onwards, a new F1 game has been released every year. In 2012, the extra game F1 Race Stars was also released. Thus, there are a total of 23 F1 games.
F1 2009 could not be played on stationary consoles, only on the Wii. It was available only for the Wii, PSP, and iOS. This changed with F1 2010, which was released as usual for PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and iOS. F1 2011 followed the same pattern, with the addition of the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita. In 2012, it became more traditional again, with the game released only for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. However, it also appeared for Mac OS X.
In 2012, alongside F1 2012, F1 Race Stars was released. This game was released for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. In 2014, it was also released for the Wii U. F1 2013 was released for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. A year later, it also came out for Mac OS. F1 2014 was the last game of the older console generation. It was released only for the standard platforms: PC, Xbox 360, and PS3.
In 2015, F1 2015 was released only for the new console generation. To play this game, you needed a PC, PlayStation 4, or Xbox One. F1 2016 was also playable on mobile devices, appearing on the known platforms, as well as iOS, Android, and even tvOS (the operating system of Apple-TV devices). F1 2017 was not released on all these platforms. It was available only for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and additionally for macOS and Linux.
F1 2018 and 2019 were released only for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox 360. The 2020 game was also available on the cloud service Stadia. F1 2021 was now available for the latest console generation. It was released for PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, and Series X|S. So it was possible to play this game on the newest and slightly older consoles.
The three newest games were released under a slightly different name. Instead of F1 2022, the game is called F1 22. This also applies to the years 23 and 24. All three games can be played on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
Development of Game Mechanics
The F1 games are all played in first-person and aim to offer a realistic racing experience. This was one of the biggest selling points back in 2000 compared to competing games. This realism has naturally improved over the years. Now, with F1 24, you really feel like the driver in an F1 car. This is also due to the development of external technologies, but more on that later.
Even the very first F1 game, Formula 1 2000, could be played in multiplayer mode. This made it possible to always compete with friends.
F1 24
F1 24 is the latest game in the F1 series. It was fully released on May 31. However, with the pre-order of the Champions Edition, you could play it on May 28. F1-24 has a completely new Dynamic Handling System, which is now even more realistic. The new physics give you more control over your vehicle and allow you to better adapt it to your personal driving style. This naturally changes performance and strategy completely.
Additionally, a new mode has been added to the game: the Challenge Career. This mode brings competitive events into the game. In these challenges, you play for a high score on a global scoreboard. The events can be influenced by the community, either on social media or in the EA Sports Racenet Companion App.
F1 24 also supports crossplay, so it is possible to play together across different consoles. There is also a co-op career mode. Here, you can play the standard career mode with a friend as a rival. This creates even greater excitement in the races.
F1 24 also features a new prestige system. By completing special tasks in the races, you earn prestige. This prestige is important for getting new contracts or can lead to secret meetings with rivals to negotiate a team switch. Additionally, your reputation affects how much your team supports you. The more prestige you have, the more motivated your team is.
For the PC, there are some extra features. Firstly, there is ray tracing, which makes the lighting even better and more realistic. You can also freely adjust your graphics settings to suit your hardware and preferences. Highlights can be saved so you can relive your best moments. You can also create custom races and download pre-made races from the Steam Workshop. F1 24 also allows you to enhance the game with external hardware.
The game supports almost any controller and steering wheels and more, but more on that in a moment. Additionally, you can play the game with a VR headset to feel even more like you are in a Formula 1 car. There is also eye tracking support, so the game can detect where you are looking and adjust your view accordingly without a VR headset.
External Hardware for F1 24
Many players want to make Formula 1 racing on the PC even more realistic and do not play the game like most with a mouse and keyboard or a regular controller. Many use steering wheels with external pedals, shifters, brakes, clutches, and more. Some community members even build full simulators with multiple monitors for a 360-degree view. This makes you really feel like you are in a Formula 1 car.
Even Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen, who has dominated Formula 1 for years, has such a setup. Although he prefers to race in iRacing rather than playing F1 games. Which makes sense since he can do this directly on the racetrack and doesn’t need to sit at a PC.
What’s Coming Next?
It’s pretty obvious: F1 25. Although it hasn’t been announced yet, it will most likely be released next year. The new game will then focus on the new racing season and aim to make the experience even better and more realistic.
