Summary

What is Black Myth: Wukong?

Black Myth: Wukong is a game coming out in just a few days, on August 20th, by Game Science. This studio gained some attention through their free-to-play game Art of War: Red Tides. But Black Myth: Wukong is going in a totally different direction compared to the real-time strategy game. Black Myth: Wukong is an action RPG with some Souls-like elements.

In this game, you play as Wukong, the Monkey King, who comes from Chinese mythology. We’ll talk more about Chinese mythology later. In Black Myth: Wukong, you’ll go on an unforgettable journey into this mythology. You’ll fight all sorts of enemies passed down from stories, like dragons, huge bears, spiders, and many others. Each of these enemies has different strengths and weaknesses, bringing you all sorts of battles and boss fights.

Black Myth: Wukong

The boss fights in Black Myth: Wukong will often be quite challenging, much like what you’re used to from other Souls-like games. The weapon you wield is a staff, but just an ordinary staff would be too boring, right? Your staff, named “Ruyi Jingu Bang,” can change its length. You can also enhance your staff with different types of magic. Besides enhancement spells, there are also spells that weaken and slow down your enemies.

Every enemy has their own backstory. This helps you as the player understand the motives of your enemy through their origins and history. But, of course, you don’t have to fight every character. Some turn out not to be evil, leading to nice dialogues throughout the game that bring out various emotions.

Story of Black Myth: Wukong

The story of Black Myth: Wukong is, as mentioned, based on a Chinese story, specifically “Journey to the West.” This book is one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature. It was written in the 16th century during the Ming Dynasty by Wu Cheng’en. The book is about the principle of travel, mixed with folklore and other legends of the time.

Black Myth: Wukong

The first part of “Journey to the West” is about heaven and earth. This is when the monkey, Sun Wukong, is born with supernatural abilities and later even achieves immortality. Wukong declares himself the Monkey King and causes trouble in heaven. The Jade Emperor, the ruler of heaven, doesn’t like this at all and sends all his troops after Wukong. But Sun Wukong always manages to escape, not just through sheer strength, but with his cunning as well.

Since nothing works, the Jade Emperor asks Buddha himself for help. Buddha then manages to trick Wukong by creating a mountain from the five elements—fire, water, earth, wood, and metal—and burying Wukong under it. Wukong is also bound to a rock with a spell and can’t escape. Now 500 years pass until Wukong is freed by the Buddhist monk Xuanzang. Xuanzang then takes Wukong as his disciple, which is probably where the game will begin. Unfortunately, there aren’t many details about the story yet, except that it’s based on this book.

This point would be a great place to start the game, as Wukong now embarks on a 10-year journey with Xuanzang, where he eventually wants to travel to Buddha. On this journey, the group, which actually consists of 4 people, encounters various monsters, making this story a perfect template for a video game.

This story is even based on real events, if you take out the whole part with demons, the Monkey King, etc. The real story took place during the Tang Dynasty. The monk Xuanzang traveled along the Silk Road from China to India, meaning he journeyed west to study Buddhism and then brought it back to China to spread it.

How is the story put into the game?

As mentioned before, there are very few details on how the story will actually be integrated into the game. But in the latest “Final Trailer” for Black Myth: Wukong, which you can also see above, Wukong is seen sitting with a monk in front of a temple at the end. Because of this, it’s safe to assume that the game takes place after the 500 years when Wukong was imprisoned.

Also, Wukong won’t be traveling with a group, and the entire gameplay and battles will be fought solo. However, it’s likely that through dialogues with some NPCs, more details from the book have been included in the game. This has been done in many other games inspired by books; just look at the Metro series. You can find more details in our Pixel Sundays article on the Metro series.
