Of Ash and Steel: tinyBuild Announces a New Open World RPG

On 18th November 2024, tinyBuild unveiled Of Ash and Steel, an immersive Open World RPG crafted by the dedicated studio Fire & Frost. Their quirky live-action trailer offers a glimpse of the team and some teasers of what lies ahead.

The world of Of Ash and Steel is set primarily on the island of Grayshaft, part of the Kingdom of the Seven archipelago. Players will step into the boots of Tristan in a classic RPG adventure. Exploration will be heavily rewarded, but careful preparation is essential as brute strength won’t suffice. The game openly draws inspiration from classics like Gothic and Fable, while also bearing similarities to modern hits like The Witcher.

Of Ash and Steel: First Gameplay Showcase

While the trailer offers an intriguing glimpse, it doesn’t reveal much about the gameplay. However, ENFANT TERRIBLE received an exclusive gameplay showcase from tinyBuild. Here are some highlights from the showcase:

Combat

The gameplay revealed three combat styles, depending on the weapon. This includes the Greatsword and Bow. We also see Tristan kick a rock to temporarily stagger an enemy. Magic also plays a role, with abilities like a light source and magic dash.

Exploration

Exploration, confirmed by the team, is central to the experience. Through exploration, players can uncover side quests that build alliances and potentially recruit allies. Players can rest at bonfires, craft potions, or prepare meals.

Enemies

Enemies range from humans to fantastical creatures like Trolls and Goblins. Goblins, for instance, use combined attacks. A day-night cycle also influences exploration and enemy danger levels, with enemies becoming more vigilant and deadly at night.

What to Expect from Fire & Frost with Of Ash and Steel

The gameplay shown is from an older build missing features like voice acting and containing placeholder translations. Nevertheless, Of Ash and Steel shows promise as a game capable of capturing the essence of classic RPGs like Gothic and Fable.

As for the release date, while not fully confirmed, the team seems to target a 2025 launch on PC. It’s shaping up to be a must-play, especially if the team delivers the immersive RPG experience promised with Of Ash and Steel.
