Night Is Coming is the new survival/tower defense strategy game from the team at Wild Forest Studio and published by 101XP. A Russian development team founded in 2017, they are debuting with Night Is Coming, a survival-style strategy game set in a fantasy world inspired by Slavic folklore.
With a tower defense approach, where we’ll need to prepare our village for the night and its dangers. The game was first announced on May 14, 2017, with an Alpha showcase in 2020. After the team’s return in 2023, the publisher’s announcement came at the end of 2024, followed by the trial and demo launch in early 2025. Their debut game is a strategic survival set in a fantasy world inspired by Slavic mythology. The game officially launches today, April 14, 2025, on Steam and the Epic Games Store in Early Access.
You’ll control a group of villagers, creating a settlement, gathering resources, creating troops, and building defenses to prepare for the threat of Darkness, which has already consumed many lands and now threatens the lives of your villagers. The game offers a mix of tower defense with strategic and management gameplay.
Night Is Coming: Gameplay and Main Features
A big step forward for Wild Forest Studio with the Early Access of Night Is Coming available today. An interesting strategy game that blends an RTS heart with a Tower Defense loop. Offering:
- Lead your people: Each villager has different attributes and needs. It’s up to us to guide them to gather resources, assign tasks, and attract new villagers.
- Manage your settlement: Build houses, expand buildings to improve production and efficiency, and reinforce defenses in preparation for the Darkness’ assaults.
- Fight Monsters: We’ll need to train our warriors to survive, also using Magic to protect and enhance our troops. Monsters like Ghouls, Leshies, Werewolves, and Night Hags are ready to destroy our settlement.
- Unlock new Technologies: The key to survival will be unlocking new technologies and upgrades, using resources like Spirit Energy and Darkness Shards. These upgrades will add both economic and military benefits.
A truly interesting game, which has received positive feedback from playtests that began in January. It also got attention from the demo released on February 13, 2025, during the Steam Next Fest. Players could try the updated Trial version of Wrath of the Woods released on March 24.
