Mafia 4: Disappointing News for Fans at Summer Game Fest
With the Summer Game Fest, the annual gaming conference and meeting place for publishers and developers to showcase all the new games, there is also some news on the 2K front. News particularly concerning one of the games from the supposed lineup that was to be presented at the show starting, on 7 June 2024, namely Mafia 4.
Mafia 4 is not the reveal of the Summer Game Fest
A few weeks before the Summer Game Fest approached, some leakers pointed to the announcement of a teaser for the fourth installment of the Mafia series. In fact, there was talk of confirming the existence of four major flagship games for 2K: Bioshock 4, Borderlands 4, Mafia 4, and Civilization 7. Unfortunately, according to the latest news, the teaser to be presented at the show is not about Mafia 4 as initially suggested, but rather a new installment of the Borderlands series.
The Mafia series, as many will now know, is a series that returned after a long absence thanks to the Remakes of the trilogy by Hangar 13, with the Mafia: Definitive Edition. A project that brought the series back with strong positive feedback from fans, both old and new.
Mafia 4 – The reasons for its absence at the Summer Game Fest
The leaks certainly excited many fans of the series who were ready right away to learn more about the new chapter in the Mafia series. Unfortunately, the most recent leaks have certainly disappointed, although many have rationalized the fact. We know that Mafia 4 has been in development since at least 2022, so just under 2 years. And about 4 years since the release of the Definitive Edition. In short, a too short period, especially with a Mafia 4 that is rumored to want to be more ambitious than ever. While Borderlands, which has seen some spin-offs in recent years, has lacked a main installment since 2019 with Borderlands 3. Also, the fact that the Hangar 13 team recently worked on Top Spin 2k25, bringing the series back after an absence of 13 years, makes it too soon for a new announcement of the caliber of Mafia.
Surely many would have preferred even a simple teaser for Mafia 4, and maybe for Civilization 7 and a fourth chapter of Bioshock. Since these titles are more or less confirmed to be in development, although some (Bioshock) are still in the early stages. That said, there will certainly be future opportunities for Mafia series fans to learn more about the new chapter.
