This month, 2K, primarily known for their NBA games, are releasing a refreshing new racing game for young and old, called LEGO 2K Drive.

LEGO and Racing?

 

Yes, you heard it right, 2K is now releasing a LEGO racing game, namely LEGO 2K Drive.

LEGO 2K Drive will be released on 19th May 2023 for all current consoles, including PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC, where it will be available on Epic Games and Steam.

LEGO 2K Drive is an AAA adventure racing game inspired by current racing games such as Forza Horizon, Need for Speed, and Mario Kart.

In the game, you play in an open world where you can freely build your own cars and explore different tracks and environments. It is similar to Forza Horizon games, where you can find street racing, off-road racing, and much more in the open world.

The open world is designed in a western style, but 2K adds variety to the world through different areas and buildings, making the world not boring.

The game offers different game modes, including a story mode where you explore the open world. Then, there is a cup series similar to Mario Kart, where you can race multiple races in tournament form against your friends or online. There are also simple races and some mini-games.

The mini-games often involve some kind of combat, such as an invasion of robots or defending generators against skeletons. All of these missions are available in multiple difficulty levels, allowing you to replay them and try to beat other players’ high scores.

In LEGO 2K Drive, you can not only conquer the streets, but also transform into a boat like in The Crew, making water no longer an obstacle for you.

The transition between different vehicles is very smooth, so once you enter the water, you automatically transform into a boat that continues to drive without losing speed.

Building your vehicle

 

You have the ability to create your own vehicles, including those designed for off-road, street, and water travel.

When building your vehicles, the possibilities are almost endless. You start with a selection of chassis and then build your vehicle according to your own preferences.

You have access to over 200 different parts to build your vehicle, which can make it unique and special. These include not only the standard LEGO blocks that everyone knows, but also many complex parts that can modify your vehicle.

Of course, all vehicles have different driving styles due to their various constructions. This will likely lead to many builders trying to create the best vehicle, which will be primarily used in online games.

If you want to decorate your vehicle with a cute animal after completing it, the game offers you some options too.

After completing your vehicles, you can share them publicly with other users so they can test your creation.

How do the cars handle?

 

As you may remember from your own LEGO building experience, the parts tend to come apart quite easily. This is also the case in LEGO 2K Drive, but you can repair yourself by collecting your individual parts. If you are completely destroyed, you will be reset. If you cannot collect all of your parts, which is often not possible during races, you will be automatically repaired after a short time. Losing these parts won’t change anything for your driving experience. 

In the open world, which you can also explore with friends, many objects are no problem for you, be it a lantern, a pedestrian, or another car. Most things can be easily destroyed.

 

What are the races like?

 

The races in LEGO 2K Drive are similar to those in Mario Kart. You race with a group of 8 players, with both friends and AI opponents in multiplayer mode. Like in Mario Kart, there are several power-ups that can strongly influence the outcome of the race, such as rockets that destroy your opponents or a net that holds them in place.

This promises chaos and a lot of fun, especially with friends. Every player has a standard boost, which recharges automatically during the race.

There is also a quick start, as in Mario Kart, so there are many parallels between the two games.

Which edition should I buy?

 

If you are not sure which edition to buy, I can help you with your decision and tell you what is included in the different editions.

The Standard Edition only includes the base game, and you can play the game on May 19th.

With the slightly more expensive Awesome Edition, you can play LEGO 2K Drive on May 16th and also get the Season Pass, which includes 4 DLCs and additional vehicles.

The Awesome Rivals Edition offers you additional vehicles in addition to the regular Awesome Edition.

 

More Lego games in the future?

 

LEGO 2K Drive was announced as the first of several games that 2K wants to bring to the market in collaboration with Lego. However, what those games are has not yet been revealed.
