Kingmakers is a game announced on the 20th February by Tinybuild, the renown publisher of indie games, in the hands of the team of Redemption Road, behind the exuberant Road Redemption. With its first trailer, it has definitely caught the attention of all those who initially thought it was yet another 3D strategy game, but halfway through it changed everything. With a release date set for 2024 on PC and potentially on consoles.
What is Kingmakers
Kingmakers is defined as an action strategy game with a sandbox core. What particularly surprises is how the team has decided to combine the typical real-time medieval strategy with what has always been in the minds and fantasies of many: the journey into the past with modern and futuristic weapons! In fact, in Kingmakers, we find ourselves having to save the world by going back 500 years in the past, bringing with us an arsenal of modern and futuristic weapons, to rewrite the past and change the future with the power of modern weapons.
Kingmakers Gameplay
Based on Unreal Engine 5, Kingmakers makes use of all modern features by allocating character rendering to dedicated hardware graphics, being able to not only offer hundreds, almost thousands of units on the field but also significantly differentiate them visually and with different behaviors. With the possibility to choose between England, Wales, or Scotland, we’ll decide to help these kingdoms in changing the course of history. We’ll lead troops in real-time on the battlefield and decide formations and approaches, but also be in the midst of battle thanks to a varied arsenal of weapons and we will change the outcome of the clashes.
Being able to play the Campaigns, alone or in co-op, where we will return to the fifteenth century, we can not only create and reinforce our castle but also each of the 3 factions with a story based on real events of the period.
Kingmakers: Release and Team Promises
Thanks to an interview with John Linneman of Digital Foundry, we have some news about Kingmaker. The team seems to be quite enthusiastic and proud of the work on the game, speaking in depth about the technologies and methods used for the rendering of units, interactions, and more. We have confirmation of object destructibility, not only related to the battlefield but especially to armor, being able to use firearms to destroy pieces of enemy armor and buildings. There is also talk of good optimization, being able to potentially reach 60 FPS on consoles and it even seems to run on the Steam Deck with some minor compromises.
The team continues to actively work on adding features like day and night cycles, and weather effects with an eye on performance impact. In short, it seems we need to wait a bit longer before hearing the exact release date, but it is undeniable that Kingmakers could become another one of those 2024 games that focus entirely on fun, as already seen with Palworld and Helldivers 2.
