In recent weeks, there have been rumors of a potential delay for GTA VI, pushing the release all the way to 2026. However, some figures connected to the GTA universe seem to be refuting these claims, giving hope for a 2025 launch.
Insights from Former Rockstar Director on Potential GTA 6 Delays
The origins of the rumors about the delay of GTA VI, the next highly anticipated chapter in Rockstar’s famous series, are difficult to pinpoint. Some early rumors suggested an 18-month gap between the console and PC releases, and then came rumors of a possible delay to 2026. Refuting these rumors is Obbe Vermeij on Twitter (X), the former Rockstar employee and Technical Director of the series from GTA 3 until GTA IV, who spoke about his experience with internal delays at the company.
Obbe specifically mentions the delay of GTA IV, explaining how Rockstar decided to push back the game internally only about four months before the original release date. Therefore, according to Obbe, it’s highly unlikely they are already discussing about a delay nearly a year before the expected release date—or at least, Rockstar itself may not even be aware of a potential delay. He also notes that Take-Two Interactive will surely give the team time and space, considering the size and importance of the Grand Theft Auto brand in the gaming industry.
The decision to delay gta IV was made 4 months or so before the original release date. Any further and it's hard to make the call. R* is probably not in a position to determine whether they will hit 2025 until May-ish.

Why a GTA 6 Delay Might Not Impact Its Success
As Vermeij himself adds, it’s important to remember that GTA 6 is one of the most anticipated titles in recent years, and it will sell regardless of any delay. This title faces the tough task of surpassing the previous, still popular GTA V. We’re talking about a GTA V that has sold over 200 million copies, alongside Red Dead Redemption II, which sold around 70 million copies. Both games still played to this, and both experienced some form of delays in the past.
It’s inevitable that Take-Two wants to deliver an almost perfect experience at launch, both to meet the game’s high level of hype and to avoid the potential backlash that could result from a problematic release of a game and brand of this caliber. Therefore, it’s hard to determine whether GTA VI will be delayed or not, with only the Fall 2025 date and the first teaser as the only official sources. We can only wait for official news about the game, perhaps with a second trailer, along with other Rockstar games like the Max Payne 1 & 2 remakes, to accompany us before the fateful launch of GTA VI. Maybe we’ll also discover the evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series in our article Pixel Sundays: The Evolution from GTA to GTA 6.
