Warner Bros. Games has reportedly canceled an unannounced DLC for Hogwarts Legacy, the open-world RPG set in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. The expansion was expected to release later this year alongside a Definitive Edition of the game.

Hogwarts Legacy DLC Canceled by Warner Bros. Games

Hogwarts Legacy, one of the best-selling games in 2023, was expected to get a major DLC later this year, expanding the open-world RPG with additional storylines and content. Unfortunately, according to Bloomberg, those plans have been scrapped as Warner Bros. Games continues to restructure following the financial failure of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

Although a DLC was never officially unveiled, it was reportedly coming alongside a Definitive Edition, which was to launch later this year with all previously released content and updates included.

Why Was the DLC Canceled?

Hogwarts Legacy developer Avalanche Software was working closely with Rocksteady Studios on an upcoming expansion based on a storyline and companion cut from the original game during development. But, due to the failure of Rocksteady’s live-service game Suicide Squad, Rocksteady has been hit with significant layoffs as Warner Bros. Games restructures.

Warner Bros. Games recently canceled its Wonder Woman game and shut down its Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. Games San Diego studios. The publisher has described the closures and multiple game cancelations as a “strategic change in direction.”

What This Means for Fans

Earlier this year, Warner Bros. Games expressed its wish to focus on its more successful franchises, such as Hogwarts Legacy, Mortal Kombat, and Game of Thrones, but with the DLC canceled, the company may want to focus on the confirmed sequel as that would potentially offer more financial returns.

Recently, the company tried to capitalize on the Harry Potter IP with Quidditch Champions, which unfortunately failed to impress gamers, signaling another missed opportunity.

What’s Next for the Franchise?

Avalanche Software is working on a Hogwarts Legacy sequel with many expecting a release date as early as February 2026. In the meantime, fans hope a Definitive Edition of the first game will launch by the end of the year.

Having surpassed 23 million copies sold, the sequel will have a lot of hype surrounding its launch, and Warner Bros. Games will be keen to take advantage. Another miss could result in the end of the franchise or another significant change in strategic direction.

Conclusion

Warner Bros. Games has reportedly canceled an upcoming Hogwarts Legacy DLC as all focus moves to the sequel coming in 2026. What do you think about the latest news? Let us know in the comments.
