Hogwarts Legacy: A Magical Sales Milestone with 22 Million Copies in 2023

Hogwarts Legacy Soars to Success, Becoming the Best-Selling Video Game of 2023

Open-world fantasy RPG Hogwarts Legacy was the best-selling video game last year, selling a magical 22 million copies in 2023.

Hogwarts Legacy was released on February 10, 2023, on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S and then on PS4 and Xbox One on May 5, meaning it had a large chunk of the year to rack up its impressive sales numbers – which it was always likely to have considering its set in the Harry Potter universe.

What has seemingly helped the game top the industry’s sales charts is that it is set a century before the Harry Potter books, allowing players to explore a fantasy world and setting they love but uncover an original story that is told through the choices they make.

Speaking to Variety, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment president David Haddad agreed, saying, “it brought Harry Potter to life in a new way for gamers where they could be themselves in this world, in this story.”

Haddad spoke of his pride in developer Avalanche Studio in the game reaching 22 million copies sold and being the best-selling game of 2023, which ends a 13-year run where either Call of Duty or Rockstar’s GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2 ended the year top of the industry.

It also became one of the most-played games on Steam and Steam Deck, with an all-time peak of 879,308 players and a 91.81 “Overwhelmingly Positive” review score. Many wanted to watch, too, with a peak of 1,258,495 viewers on Twitch.

And for those who love numbers, Hadded shared that players played for 707 million hours, brewed 819 potions, harvested 1.3 billion magical plants, rescued 593 million beasts, and defeated 4.9 billion dark wizards.

This only marks the beginning for the Potterverse series of games, as Warner Bros. Games’ Quidditch Champions (the sport where wizards ride flying broomsticks and attempt to score goals above an oval pitch) is in its testing phase and expected to be released in the coming months.

Unfortunately, we don’t know for sure if there will be a Hogwarts Legacy 2 or any future DLC releases for Hogwarts Legacy, but with its critical and commercial success, it’s hard to envision a future where the game and series ends here.
