Ghost of Yōtei – Takes us back in Japan, 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima

With an official announcement on 24 September, PlayStation reveals Ghost of Yōtei. The next chapter from Sucker Punch, continuing the series started with Ghost of Tsushima. The new game features a new story and a new protagonist, set 300 years after the events of the first game.

Surprisingly, Sucker Punch has revealed Ghost of Yōtei, with an announcement on 24 September 2024 during the State of Play. Announcement where the team unveils this new game as the next chapter following Ghost of Tsushima. Featuring an entirely new story, set approximately 300 years after Jin Sakai’s tale in Tsushima.

In Ghost of Yōtei, we’ll play as a mysterious Ronin named Atsu. The story will primarily take place in 1603 around the area of Mount Yōtei, from which the game takes its name. With this new chapter, Sucker Punch has decided to turn “Ghost of” into a series. This comes after the huge success of Ghost of Tsushima, leading to the team becaming tourism ambassadors for the island of Tsushima.

Ghost of Yōtei – What we know about the new Tsushima sequel

The short game trailer mainly shows us the setting and landscapes of Ghost of Yōtei. From what we can gather from the trailer, we will have the opportunity to explore the 4 seasons of Mount Yōtei. A mountain nestled in the heart of Ezo, where present-day Hokkaido lies. Therefore, we will be in a more rural area of 1603, full of dangers.

We don’t know much about the protagonist Atsu, except that there is a bounty on her head, attracting the attention of many bounty hunters. The game takes place at the beginning of the Edo Period, marking the rise of the Tokugawa shogunate. Although we don’t know Atsu’s mission, her Shamisen and the mempō (the half-mask she wears) seems to tie her to a samurai family.

In Ghost of Yōtei, we not only are able to experience a generational leap in visuals thanks to the PS5 hardware, but we’ll also notice the changing of seasons and a meticulous attention to landscape details. Although gameplay hasn’t been shown yet, the final snippet reveals that Atsu will have access to firearms. Specifically, matchlock rifles, possibly of Portuguese origin, given the shipment of weapons found in Sakai’s port in 1593.

With a release date set for 2025 exclusively on PlayStation 5, there is still a long wait ahead. We await further news from Sucker Punch, adding another title to the list of the most anticipated games of 2025.
