Exclusive: Sleeping Dogs Film Adaptation Is in the Works!
According to a well-known actor, it looks like negotiations have been taking place recently for a film adaptation of Sleeping Dogs by Square Enix.

Sleeping Dogs is an open-world action game by United Front Games, published by Square Enix. Originally released in 2012, it takes players to Hong Kong as officer Wei Shen, whose mission is to infiltrate the Sun On Yee triad.
Offering an action-packed experience with martial arts, weapons, and parkour, the game features a classic crime story that was well received by players. Even though Square Enix expected higher sales, Sleeping Dogs remains beloved by many gamers over a decade later.
Sleeping Dogs Movie – Lead Actor Confirms
On January 31, 2025, renowned actor Simu Liu made the announcement. Liu, famous for his role as Shang-Chi in Marvel adaptations, finally confirmed the Sleeping Dogs movie adaptation after teasing the community for a while.
He admitted that getting the adaptation greenlit was a challenge. As they had to explain and convince executives about the project. However, the movie is now confirmed, with Simu Liu excited to play the lead role and hoping the film’s success will lead to a game sequel.

Sleeping Dogs Movie: What We Know
This isn’t the first time a Sleeping Dogs movie was announced. In 2017, a film starring Donnie Yen as Shen, produced by Neal Moritz, was planned but was recently canceled. However, a new adaptation is now in development.
This time, the project is in the hands of Story Kitchen, known for successful Sonic the Hedgehog film adaptations. The team is adding Sleeping Dogs to its list of upcoming adaptations, with Simu Liu starring as officer Wei Shen.
