The “ransomware” group that claimed to have hacked Epic Games and stolen 200GB of date has confessed to faking the hack to gain publicity.
Last week, a group calling themselves Mogilevich, claimed to have hacked Epic Games and stolen 200GB worth of data, promising to release it any buyer willing to pay $15,000. But, now they’re claiming it was all a publicity stunt, calling themselves “professional fraudsters.”
It’s a relief for users of Epic and Fortnite players as the group never disclosed if the apparent information they had obtained was that of users, employees, or both.
It will also come as good news to Epic, who, it must be said, claimed all along that they were not aware of any such data breach and that the Epic Games Store continued to be safe to use.
As for Mogilevich, the ransomware group confession comes with them admitting the link they offered on their website was to show that none of the databases they claimed to have hacked were true, but instead to “gain visibility as quickly as possible” and to build “meticulously our new trafficking of victims to scam.”
Mogilevich tells me they are selling the data for 15K and will not provide proof of the breach unless you are looking to purchase it and show "proof of funds."

They even claim to have sold a non-existent 1TB database to someone for $85,000 who was worried about potential information leaking. However, this could also be a lie in a bid to gain further notoriety.
In conclusion, for most of us, it’s all been rather pointless. Ransomware and other data breaches continue to be a daily issue and should not be taken lightly. But this, by all accounts, is a group trying to make quick money, and to most of us, we can ignore and continue our daily gaming.
