Embracer Group Acquires Square Enix Development Studios
The Embracer Group is going to acquire three video game development studios for $300 million.

The Embracer Group took the video games industry by storm when it announced that it is acquiring three video game studios under Square Enix. These studios are: Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal, and Square Enix Montréal.
In a press release, Embracer revealed that the three studios represent over 1,100 employees across eight locations worldwide. This will bring Embracer’s total employee count to over 14,000. After closing this deal, the United States will be Embracer’s #1 country (according to the number of developers), followed by Canada.
As for the IPs included in the acquisition, Embracer said it sees an opportunity to invest in the Tomb Raider and Deus Ex franchises, as well as other acquired IP such as Legacy of Kain, Thief, “and other original franchises.”
The company will also continue sales and operations of over 50 back-catalogue games from these studios.
The Embracer Group was originally Nordic Games, which acquired various assets from THQ when it went bankrupt and was rebranded to THQ Nordic.
In its entirety, the group currently owns THQ Nordic, Koch Media, Coffee Stain, Amplifier Game Invest, Saber Interactive, DECA Games, Gearbox Entertainment, Easybrain, Asmodee and Dark Horse. This also translates to over 850 franchises owned.
The acquisition is expected to be completed by Embracer’s Q2 financial year 22/23 (between July-September 2022).
