About this game

Yakuza Kiwami is a story-rich action-adventure role-playing game about the seedy underbelly of Japan and the organization that runs it developed by SEGA. Step into the shoes of Kazuma Kiryu an up-and-coming lieutenant advisor for the Tojo Clan’s Dojima Family, you are only one step closer to having your own sub-family in this prestigious group. But the unthinkable happens Sohei Dojima the patriarch of the Dojima family kidnaps Kiryu’s childhood friend Yumi, in an effort to save her your sworn brother Akira Nishikiyama, rushes after them. As you arrive on the scene you see Nishikiyama holding the smoking gun over Dojima’s dead body and Yumi in shock from the trauma. In order to save your brother, you make a decision that will change your life forever, picking up the gun and sending Nishikiyama out of the room to look after Yumi. Ten years later you come out of prison to a world you no longer recognize.

I think Yakuza Kiwami, and the original game in general, had one of the best Yakuza plots in the series, and that holds true even today. The sole focus on Kazuma as the protagonist makes for a more focused adventure than Yakuza 4 and 5, and it’s nice to see how Kazuma builds his reputation as the Dragon of Dojima with this game.

Calling Yakuza Kiwami a remaster almost feels unfair. You’d be hard-pressed to recognize it as a PS2 game originally, with the graphical improvements and gameplay additions bringing it on par with the other recent entries in the series. As fans would have come to expect it’s an intriguing story, with deep, likable characters, brutal combat, and plenty of side stuff to keep you busy.
