The most recent game in the well-known X series of space simulation / sandbox games, with the tagline TRADE FIGHT BUILD THINK, is X4: Foundations. These games are played as action games from a first-person perspective in a living breathing cosmos. A vast universe of NPC ships and stations are simulated in X4: Foundations, creating a realistic economy.

• Start your trip from a variety of gamestarts and as a variety of people, each of whom has a unique position, set of relationships, and starting ship and technology.
• Everything can be piloted from the cockpit or an external view, including small scouts, a variety of ship classes, and the largest carrier.
• The X games’ guiding principle has always been the construction of factories and space stations. Most players desire to build their own economies and begin having a bigger impact on the universe once they have amassed enough money from trading or combat.
• The first X game to do so, X4, gives all races and factions the freedom to establish and grow their empires. They have access to the same creative freedom that players have when developing space stations out of modular building blocks.
• The map will become your favorite means of management after you have more ships and a large number of NPCs working as pilots, crew, or station managers for you.
• Realistic, simulated economies have long been one of the main selling features of X games. The goods are genuinely traded by NPCs, and prices change according to this simulated economy. The goods are manufactured by hundreds of stations and carried by thousands of ships.
• On a higher level, the fluid transition from ship to ship and from you commanding your empire to NPCs continues. You will become highly interested in studying teleportation from your headquarters once you have a larger fleet.

Reviews

If you dream of a single-player Star Citizen, or loved games like Freelancer, then this space sandbox will be a breath of fresh air in a much too sparsely populated genre. However, even though X4 is more accessible than X1–X3, it’s not a casual game. You have to work to figure out the mechanics behind Foundations, and if you put in the time, you’ll be rewarded with an experience that can last 100 hours or more.

Game Revolution

 

Foundations is more of the same niche-scratching space exploration from previous iterations with a more immersive feel and I can’t wait to dive back into my personal galaxy. For those that have been watching the X series from the outside, Foundations is a great entry point, provided you meet the beefy system requirements.
