A good tower defense fantasy game with RPG elements that came to the end of early access this March 9th. I would distinguish 3 aspects: the heroes who defend your base against hordes of enemies, the city and the defences.
Between 2 waves, if you survive of course, the heroes (who are your fighters, they embody your armed forces) don’t get all their mana and health back, but you can change that and buy upgrades in town. Between 2 runs, you will unlock new skills and new buildings, the rogue-like aspect is well present (the game reminds me a bit of They Are Billions).
Moreover, just like in They Are Billions, there is no lack of challenge! However, The Last Spell offers a new experience with a multitude of things we’ve already seen. And it does it well, it’s addictive, you want to go on, to go back, the games are interesting, you appreciate the fact of progressing, there is a gratifying side.
The interface is well designed, and there’s nothing to say about optimisation or ergonomics either. I recommend it without hesitation.
The Last Spell is a strategy RPG that pits players against hordes of monsters in a dark fantasy world. Players must recruit and train a team of heroes, strategically position them on the battlefield, and manage their fortress to survive against an endless wave of enemies. With detailed pixel art graphics and intense turn-based combat, The Last Spell promises to be a challenging and thrilling experience.
As the protector of the last bastion of humanity, you fight against the zombie apocalypse. You get heroes to kill the zombies. The Zombies intend to kill the last humans. Your heros get magic and physical powers to win against the zombies.
The Last Spell is special, due to the difficulty of the game. You have to protect the humans day and night while Zombies come from every corner trying to kill humans. Mana is quickly lost when using magical powers so it gets even harder.
The third game from Ishtar Games, The Last Spell is an early access title launched in 2021 with active development with the team listening to the feedback from the players.
With a nice pixel art graphics, the game is an interesting mix of a tower defense game with base building and an active gameplay typical of a tactical rpg. Set in a medieval fantasy universe, with humanity always at war the sudden cataclysm at the hands of the mages, has brought the last remaining humans together to fight against the monsters appearing from a purple myst. In all of this we take control of a group of heroes trying to defend a city to let the last surviving mages to finish their Last Spell, capable to banish those monsters and get rid of the magic from the world.
Our objective in the game is thus defending the city, which gets ambushed by horde of several monsters attracted by the magic concentrations of the mages. The mages will require several uninterrupted days of chanting before managing to cast the spell. During the day we’ll have access to the building section, where we can spend our resources to create and strengthen our city with buildings and walls. While during the night we’ll fight off the horde with a gameplay reminescent of the classic turn based tactical rpg like FF tactics or Fire Emblem.
Our heroes will have randomized stats, weapons, gears and affinity which can be changed and levelled up during the day, not to mention changing classes to suit their stats and skills better, lettings thus be creative with our heroes. Powerfull skills and attacks may not only injure the nearby allies but also drain our limited mana resource, thus a synergized and careful use of the resources is necessary.
The game has also strong elements of roguelike, thus dying is part of the course. And with access to dark and light trees, by completing certain objective (light) and gathering dark energy (dark) we’ll be rewarded with new weapons, buildings and upgrades for the next run.
Other notable aspect of the game is the soundtrack by Remi Gallego known as The Algorithm, an amazing dark synth with powerful tones that will delight you during the slaughtering of the horde! A really interesting title, with a developer who listen to the community and a not so bad price tag of 24,99€, but available for much less during the major sales.
The Last Spell is a turn-based tactical RPG in a fantasy universe with magic and monsters. The game is still in early access but seems very fun in it’s current state, you have to defend a town with a group of mages at the center from hordes of enemies during the night, during the day you rebuild the town, set up defenses and level up/heal your party. You can get new skills for your party members, get better equipment and will have to play around enemies strengths and weaknesses. The game has also some roguelite elements and you can get stronger in each successive run.
