From the makers of Command and Conquer Remastered, The Great War: Western Front takes you on a quest to deploy forces and destroy enemy bases. Battlefields are persistent, so heavy artilleries can leave behind craters, and any trenches you build will remain throughout the game as you progress through the campaign and revisit old locations.
The Great War: Western Front is a good strategy game that tackles a historical period most titles in the genre overlook. Both the strategic and the tactical sides feature interesting mechanics and plenty of choices that affect the course of the war.
At the moment there is very little else that competes with The Great War: Western Front and it is probably the best modern interpretation of trench warfare on the gaming market.

A real time strategy game which takes place during the 1st world war and which is released... 1 month after Company of Heroes 3! However, we have here a more global vision of the conflict, since we manage the western front from 1914 to 1919. If a certain historical acuity is present and appreciated, the game remains arcade and strongly thought to be competitive in multiplayer. Numerous units are available, relatively varied, and the game pushes the tactical cursor relatively far, which will allow the most refined strategists to impose themselves. A few patches will be necessary to correct rare bugs and adjust the balance.
A brand new original hybrid strategy game from Petroglyph, a veteran team in the strategy genre, is what The Great War: Western Front is. An hex turn based strategy game with real-time conflict which can be paused, speed up for a better control. A less than common setting, taking place in the Great War, Western Front offers a Skirmish Mode against the AI in various maps and preset scenarios featuring some of the most important and renown historical battle of the conflict, a Multiplayer Mode and the Campaign, where most of the effort of the development went., being able to play as either the Allied Nations, or the Central Powers. With a Hex tile based map, we'll be thrown right off the bat into the conflict with the objective of taking enemies tiles, while trying to keep control of ours, with a back and forth of a defensive and offensive play. We'll be able to conquer a tile by taking control of command centers, headquarters and other important enemy structures, thus removing a star from that specific tile, once all the stars are gone we'll obtain that Hex, but the opposite is also true for the enemy. While we are not able to train soldiers directly as we'll receive new recruits each passing year, we can unlock new type of units, vehicles, resources and better equipment/perks thanks to the research system, where we'll need to spend our points wisely as it gets definitely harder acquire them in the late game, not to mention essential to overcome enemies, as bigger numbers doesn't always equate to a better outcome. The Great War: Western Front, presents itself as one of the few strategy games focusing on the First World War, rather than the Second, but fails to actually innovate the strategic genre, playing mostly safe with typical elements of the hybrid Hex genre, but nothing really innovating. Graphic wise it does even worse, with a rather unpolished and outdated look which fails to attract neophytes. It seems instead to be another title in the evergrowing Hex+realtime hybrid genre, that shoots a bit high with a hefty pricetag for, but that can be found at 23€ (although I recommend a 15€ base line) that can still be an interesting pick for huge fans of The Great War, that are interested in this gameplay and doesn't mind lowering a bit their standards, hoping that the dev will listen to the community feedback
