The Ascent is a new solo and cooperative action-shooter RPG set in a dystopian cyberpunk future. Ascent is a huge corporation that owns absolutely almost everyone, including you. For many years, the corporation has been functioning in its normal operations, until one day, the Ascent Group shuts down for unknown reasons and everything in your district is in chaos. Everything is owned by the corporation, without them, everything seems to be crumbling down to ashes. Jump on a mysterious mission and find out the truth behind this catastrophe. Will you be able to survive?
Considering that it’s made by a core team of just 12 (which is incredible), The Ascent feels like it was made by a team of many times more than that. Regardless of the fact it’s made up of a large amount of industry veterans, it still takes some serious skill to make a game this good with a team that small.
The Ascent proves why the cyberpunk genre is so popular right now. There isn’t anything exactly different or unique about its story, but it perfects the atmosphere with terrific environment art and an otherworldly soundtrack. Combine that with outstanding twin-stick shooter gameplay and elements of wall cover, cool-down management, and role-playing to deepen the experience. Blasting through crews of Rojins with a rocket-firing gun, the Astrosmasher, being among my personal highlights. It may have accessibility and minor performance concerns, but it’s still sensational, action-packed, and so much fun. The Ascent may be the best cyberpunk game in the last year.
The Ascent is not an easy game, either mechanically or thematically, but it is completely engaging if for no other reason than to see into a very convincingly realized future.
