Reviews
Tales of Kenzera: ZAU is a heartfelt 2D adventure, delivering a moving narrative all should experience, with strongly directed voice acting enhancing its effectiveness. The well-balanced combat and platforming design manage to be simultaneously challenging and accessible thanks to a limited toolkit you become abundantly familiar with throughout the adventure. Alas, the underwhelming bosses are an unfortunate result that sticks out, but they don’t take away from this being a must-play.

Ultimately, Tales of Kenzera: Zau is a delight from beginning to end, with only the odd frustration along the way. Add in an absolutely sublime soundtrack by Nainita Desai and strong voice acting throughout, and you have a Metroidvania with a unique flavour that absolutely deserves to be played. It’s safe to say that whatever Abubakar Salim does next with Surgent Studios, we’re here for it.

Tales of Kenzera: Zau is a gem of human experience made all the more profound because of its self-assured heart, steeped in African traditions. It is crafted to welcome Metroidvania newcomers, offering important powers like double jumping and the ability to freeze water very early on. But absolute precision is still required.

Released just a few days ago, Tales of Kenzera: ZAU seems like a good metroidvania with smooth controls, fluid combat and platforming. I played the demo a few months back and enjoyed it a lot. Inspired in African folklore, you travel on a journey across different landscapes, switching seamlessly between the sun and moon masks, each with their unique attacks and powers, to defeat different types of enemies and overcome obstacles.
I you like platformer games you’ll like Tales of Kenzera: ZAU, as it is a very pretty and very cheap one. You have to cross the colourful sacred lands as Zau, a young shaman that is looking for the spirit of his father while fighting his way against all kind of mysteries, enemies and rituals to achieve his objective. Game looks like will be a very enjoyable one for metroidvania-like fans.
Venturing into the mystical realm of Kenzera as Zau promises a poignant journey. The blend of Bantu tales, cosmic powers, and the quest to reclaim one’s father’s spirit is both evocative and intriguing. Ready to immerse myself in the beautiful yet treacherous lands and unveil the secrets of this mythological adventure!
