Melty Blood: Type Lumina is the 5th installment of the Melty Blood series, born as a sort of spin-off/sequel to Tsukihime, and now with this particular entry it also serves as a reboot for the franchise, tying in with the reboot of Tsukihime, with the still yet to localize (much like the original) -A piece of blue glass moon-.
Apart from the change in graphical style, the 2d sprites now updated to modern standard with highly detailed sprites, resembling the new Type Moon products style , from the FGO, Tsukihime and other recent adaptions of Nasu related works, as opposed to Actress Current Again’s old style, more in line with the style seen in the likes of Carnival Phantasm and other similar works of the early stage of Type Moon products.
Along with the change is style, comes also a change in story, now set 10 days before the events of a Piece of Blue Glass Moon, instead of a full year after the main route of Tsukihime. Thus missing characters o the likes of Warachia, Len and importantly Sion, the previous heroine which the original story of Melty Blood focused on. Despite these changes, Type Lumina now covers each characters story via Story Mode, giving a glimpse of different paths than in Tsukihime. Currently sporting 21 characters, from which some are variants of other, while of course returning characters include the main heroines Ciel, Arcueid and Akiha, with Shiki the protagonist, supporting characters of the like of the twin maid sisters Hisui and Kohaku, Aoko the magician, Noel. But also guest characters like the gluttonous Saber (Fate/Stay Night) and the 3 guest characters from FGO, Mash, Ishiwakamaru and the Count of Monte Cristo.
With a pretty rough launch, due with a limited rooster, missing several iconic characters including the fan favourite Neco-Arc the cat-like parody version of Arcueid, networking problem and a fierce competition from other high quality 2d fighting game, Type Lumina has been left with a pretty small community around it despite the more streamline approach, a choice heavily influenced by the insistence of not localizing the Tsukihime remake. That said the game has a good enough amount of content, with an engaging story, great characters, beautiful art and plenty of stuff to unlock, like artwork, sprites etc. A must have for those interested in the Tsukihime branch of the story, especially if you can manage to find this title at about 20€ or less.
