Code Shifter is a side-scrolling action 2d platformer game with beat ’em up mechanics with characters from all the iconic Arc System Works franchisees from Guilty Gear, Blazblue, the River City Series, etc. Step into the shoes of Stella a programmer in the employment in the development offices of a software company called “Awesome Rainbow Corp” Troubles arise however as your company is gearing up to release the final version of the game. Many mysterious bugs started popping out, and time was running out. To deal with this problem Stella whips up a debug program “Code Shifter” allowing her to dive into the game and start fixing things up.
Merging together all those different Arc System Works franchises into one game is something that could go down extraordinarily well, but Code Shifter sure isn’t the release to even come close to realizing that kind of potential. If you’re a die-hard fan of the studio, then perhaps Code Shifter is worth a look if you find it on sale someday. Otherwise, there isn’t much to see here.
With an enjoyable story, the novelty of changing between a large cast of characters, and a fun extra game mode, Code Shifter makes up for its shortcomings with many ideas successfully carried out. Bright, colorful, and energetic, Code Shifter is worth a buy for studio fans.
