A real-time strategy (RTS) is a video game where players simultaneously play out their turns without intervals or pauses in play.
In many RTS games, such as in StarCraft II, players can build structures, create units, and control individual and multiple units while gathering and managing resources, and battling against AI or other players.
RTS games are known to be demanding, and because of that, there are mechanics implemented for ease of use. For instance, the ability to hotkey a particular unit or structure and the ability to click and drag to take control of a group of units.
Victory in RTS games is commonly achieved in one of two ways, either through destroying every unit and structure the enemy has on the map, or by attrition, forcing the player to concede due to lack of resources.
As mentioned, real-time strategy games often require the player to gather resources while maintaining their army and structures; this is known as micromanagement and macro-management.
