Gore is described in the Mirriam-Webster dictionary as “gruesomeness depicted in vivid detail.” Games that are listed as gore feature extreme violence, often brutally and realistic.
There is no particular genre that we can define as gory. Games tagged as gore on Steam can be found in all genres, including horror, FPS, VR, MMO, RPG, and action.
What makes a game tagged as gore often comes down to whether the game features excessive amounts of blood with its violence depicted in such a way that the blood defines its gameplay.
Although these games can be pushed in with violent video games, what makes them stand apart from being described as violent is the excessive blood depiction. If we use Mortal Kombat as an example, that game is violent. However, due to its attention to detail, extravagant finishing moves, and extreme presentation when it comes to blood, we can also tag it as gory.
Classic style first-person shooters have commonly been considered as gory. Games such as DOOM, Rise of the Triads, Duke Nukem, and Serious Sam all feature excessive violence, such as dismemberment and decapitation. The killing, excessive violence, explosion of body parts, and the vast amount of blood shown are the main features.
It would be interesting to note that the genre you would expect to see a full list of games described as gory is horror. However, not all horror games feature gore, with most relying on jump scares, suspense, tension, uncertainty, and isolation as a means to scare rather than violence and gore.
Gore has somewhat been excluded from games as it no longer has the shock value it once had when gaming was in its infancy. However, violent VR games are often tagged as gory. In VR, we expect a certain realism, and that is what we pay for when we jump into virtual reality. For that realism, we are often faced with realistic wounds, injuries, and scenarios. So, if we hack at someone with a sword in VR, we expect the limb to be injured or worse, and that is what we get.
As mentioned, gore no longer shocks or grabs attention, as it no longer works. Gore no longer has to mean that the game concentrates more on the killing than it does on the story but instead, can often be said that it complements the narrative and the setting of the game.
Of course, there will always be those games that allow you to blow enemies up, but as gaming evolves, we find more creative ways to use the tag.
In the world of Gore Games, fantastic games can be found at incredible prices but you can also be at a greater risk of being left disappointed.
