Xbox Shuts Down Avatar Editor—Here’s How to Get Your Refund!

Microsoft officially announces the retirement of Xbox Avatar Editor, which will no longer be available starting early 2025. Confirming refunds for some in-app purchases.

The avatar system first debuted on 19 November 2008 on Xbox 360, aiming to expand the Xbox ecosystem experience. It received an update on Xbox One and finally the Editor in 2018.

Introduced for the first time at E3 2017, the Avatar Editor allowed players to customize their avatars. Unlocking some through game achievements and purchasing others in the exclusive Shop, offering over 500 cosmetic items.


Xbox – The Decision to Close the Avatar Editor

The announcement comes from the official Avatar Editor FAQ page. Stating that as of 9 January 2025, the Avatar Editor will no longer be available. Microsoft explains the decision is due to low community interaction and a shift in the Xbox experience.

Many have misunderstood the news as the complete removal of Avatars. However, Microsoft confirms that only the Editor and “Modern Avatars” will be removed. The Xbox Original Avatars, introduced in 2008 on Xbox 360, will remain available through the Xbox Original Avatars app.

Xbox Avatar Editor – What Happens to Avatars and How to Get a Refund

With the removal of the Editor, avatar customization will no longer be possible as of 9 January 2025. However, they can still be used as Gamerpics through the Xbox Original Avatars app. Players still have time to make final changes before the Editor is removed.

Additionally, the Xbox team announced refunds for purchases made in the Xbox Avatar Editor Shop. Unfortunately, these purchases will only be covered from 1 November 2023 to 9 January 2025, with refunds processed to the linked payment method. While expected by many, for now, the beloved classic Xbox Original Avatars on 360 remain safe.
