Xbox Server Closure

Server closures have become an increasingly common occurrence in the gaming industry, marking the end of an era for many beloved titles. Over the past few years, major companies have announced the shutdown of online services for iconic games, impacting communities built around them.

Xbox has been no exception with several server closures affecting both classic and modern titles as the focus shifts to newer experiences and evolving platforms.

This December, two prominent games with major multiplayer features will join the list as their servers are officially set to close, leaving fans to bid farewell to the online worlds they’ve enjoyed for years.

Xbox Server Closure

Next month, two notable Xbox games with significant multiplayer components are scheduled for server shutdowns: Friday the 13th: The Game and NBA 2K23.

Friday the 13th: The Game will cease online services on December 31, 2024. This asymmetrical horror game which has already been delisted from the Xbox Store will see 34 of its achievements become unobtainable post-closure.

Similarly, NBA 2K23 will lose its online functionality on the same date. For the Xbox Series X|S version, 28 online-only achievements will be discontinued while the Xbox One version will see 38 achievements become inaccessible. There is one achievement in the Xbox One version that has already been discontinued as of writing.

The upcoming server closures for Friday the 13th: The Game and NBA 2K23 have further sparked strong reactions from the Xbox community. Many players are expressing frustration over losing access to beloved multiplayer experiences and the inability to earn certain online achievements which will soon become permanently unobtainable. These announcements have also reignited a broader conversation about the longevity of digital games, with a growing interest in returning to physical CD copies to preserve access to purchased titles.

The clamor for offline modes in games has gained significant traction with many arguing that paying full price for games should guarantee permanent access, even after servers shut down. This raises ethical questions about the fairness of paying for digital products that rely entirely on online infrastructure, leaving players empty-handed once that infrastructure disappears.
