A Warhammer RPG has reportedly been canceled by Games Workshop, despite the recent success of other Warhammer projects and an upcoming Warhammer 40K universe created by Amazon and Henry Cavill. The unannounced game was in development by Thought Pennies before it was dropped late last year.

Games Workshop cancels upcoming Warhammer RPG

A Warhammer RPG developed by Thought Pennies has been canceled following layoffs at the company in 2023 and late 2024. The last round of layoffs followed a “change in strategic direction” from an unknown publisher, believed to be Games Workshop.

The unannounced game was several years in development and described by the studio as a “multiplatform, social role-playing game.”

Everything we know about Henry Cavill’s upcoming Warhammer 40K universe

Background of the Canceled Warhammer RPG

Thought Pennies was founded in 2020 by Tim Ernst, who worked on Final Fantasy XV and multiple Star Wars games. The studio quickly grew from a couple of people to a dedicated and experienced team working on what one former employee calls a “Co-Op PvE Action RPG with a cast of unique heroes and playstyles.”

The now-canceled Warhammer RPG was being developed in Unreal Engine 5 to deliver an immersive experience within the Warhammer fantasy universe.

Reasons Behind the Cancellation

Unfortunately, the last couple of years have proven difficult within the gaming industry, with layoffs occurring across the industry. Thought Pennies also suffered after funding for the studio’s project was cut, with the company suffering layoffs in 2023 and more in 2024.

Thought Pennies has significantly shrunk in size after its second round of layoffs, and it’s unknown if it is still working on a project.

Implications for Future Warhammer Projects

Despite the latest Warhammer cancelation, 2024 was a massive success for Games Workshop and its franchise. Space Marine 2 was the most-played game in the 40K franchise, selling over 4.5 million copies in its first month. Other games like Vermintide 2 and Darktide continue to thrive with loyal fanbases and ongoing developer updates.

The upcoming Warhammer 40K universe starring Henry Cavill has breathed more life into IP. Games Workshop is looking for the next smash hit title, so expect more through 2025 and beyond.

Conclusion

The cancelation of an unannounced Warhammer RPG follows layoffs at developer Thought Pennies. Although disappointed, Warhammer fans remain excited for the upcoming Amazon universe starring Henry Cavill. Are you disappointed with the latest news? Share your thoughts below.
