Todd talks about Bethesda’s games as “irresponsibly large” and full of creativity.

In a recent interview with BAFTA, Todd Howard, the key figure and the face of Bethesda, speaks about the philosophy behind how the team creates game worlds. Huge, explorable worlds that hide secrets and reward players.

Todd Howard – The World-Building Process Behind Skyrim and Starfield

The new BAFTA video from 27th September 2024, features none other than Todd Howard, Game Director and Executive Producer at Bethesda Game Studios. The man behind the famous The Elder Scrolls series and later Fallout games, starting with Fallout 3, along with the team’s latest new IP, Starfield.

Open worlds that offer fantasy and sci-fi universes, capturing the hearts of numerous players over the years. In Bethesda games, players can play for long periods and experience something different from other players and discover new fascinating worlds.

Todd explains his role as being similar to that of a film director, working with the team during the creation of quests, the world, and characters. These “irresponsibly large” game worlds are one of the most unique traits of Bethesda’s open-world games, dating all the way back to the first The Elder Scrolls: Arena in 1994 with its procedurally generated, nearly infinite map.

Bethesda – What Are the Main Inspirations

Open worlds full of creativity from the entire development team. The biggest challenge is the creative side, which plays a key role in making the game fun for a long time. Regarding Bethesda’s world inspirations, the team certainly does not shy away from citing them, often incorporating them directly into their games.

As Todd confirms, inspirations include Interstellar, The Martian, and series like Battlestar Galactica, The Expanse, and much more for Starfield. These influences can be recognized by the number of Easter Eggs in Bethesda games, spanning genres like The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones for Fantasy, and more modern references, often across Bethesda’s various IPs.

These inspirations also highlight the creative side of the game development team, one of the factors that has helped Bethesda’s games impress players. Especially with side quests, which leave room for imagination and are often appreciated even more than the main quest by many players. This is something Bethesda aimed to deliver with the recent Starfield: Shattered Space, although feedback so far hasn’t lived up to some players’ expectations from the new DLC.
