WHAT IS THE MATRIX AWAKENS: AN UNREAL ENGINE 5 EXPERIENCE?
The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience is a three-part tech demo available to download and play now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X and Series S.
The first section is a character showcase that features Keanu Reeves as Neo and Carrie-Ann Moss as Trinity.
It uses a mixture of library assets and real-time rendered characters, and there is not much else to say other than you should check it out if you have the hardware.
The second section is a linear action sequence where you play as IO, and along with Neo and Trinity, you are caught up in a car chase that is rendered with visuals almost equal to Blu-ray level of quality.
All the action, including the explosions and physics, are rendered in real-time using Epic’s incredible Chaos physics system.
The last section of the tech demo is an impressive showcase of UE5’s ability to render an open world in real-time.
You can walk, run, and drive vehicles in it as you explore city streets full of traffic, pedestrians, reflections, shadows, and highrise buildings.
The main point of this part of the demo is to show off the impressive global illumination that UE5 can deliver. It does this with temporal super-resolution (TSR) to use data from previous frames to render current ones.
Epic has even provided stats to highlight how impressive the engine is on the PS5 and Xbox Series X and Series S consoles.

- The city measures 4,138 km wide and 4,968 km long
- The city’s surface is 15.79 km2
- The city’s perimeter is 14.519 km long.
- The roads measure in at a combined distance of 260 km
- There are 1,248 intersections
- Of 45,073 cars in the demo, 38, 146 are drivable or destructible
- 17,000 traffic vehicles are destructible
- There are 7,000 buildings
- 12,422 sewer holes
- 27,848 street lamps
- Almost 10 million assets are used
- The entire world is illuminated by the sun, sky, and emissive materials.
- There are 35,000 MetaHuman pedestrians
- Several billions of polygons are used across thousands of assets
