The First Descendant vs. Destiny 2: Symbol Copying Scandal?

With an explosive launch, The First Descendant, the new third-person looter shooter from Nexon, has climbed the ranks of the most played games on Steam. Securing a solid 8th place 8 (at the time of writing) and reaching a peak of well over 260,000 concurrent users. These are decidedly positive numbers for the publisher, but making them also more susceptible to criticism from many. Some of which are directed toward the “authenticity” of the title.

The First Descendant and Destiny 2 – Copied Assets?

From the launch, The First Descendant, Nexon’s new F2P on the Unreal Engine 5, has certainly attracted the attention of many thanks to solid gameplay and a pleasing graphic design. But it has also caught the attention of fans of other games, who have immediately noticed some elements perhaps too similar to Destiny 2. And precisely in the latest Forbes article by Paul Tassi, several elements between the two titles are compared.

the famous icons of The First Descendant copied from Destiny 2

Paul’s article shows how some game icons of Nexon’s new F2P are too similar to those of Destiny 2, with just a few small alterations. Other examples are also compared, such as The First Descendant’s Different Dream rifle, which seems to share some similarities with the IKELOS series weapons from Bungie’s game, or how some game artwork looks similar, etc. Although Paul emphasizes that these can be perceived as inspired, the icons are a bit more than that, leading the author to contact both companies about it, hoping to receive clarifications soon.

The First Descendant – Reasons for similarities with other games

While waiting to hear the news regarding the aforementioned icons, we can look into the reasons for the similarities not only in artistic factors but also in gameplay, of Nexon’s F2P with other games. Even before its launch, Nexon’s title was immediately compared to Warframe, due to the shared futuristic artistic style, but also as a third-person game with looter mechanics. These are more or less justifiable facts at the level of the entire video game industry, which continues to “copy” each other often adding some features that make it “unique”. In the past, we have seen how the success of some games has led to entire genres of games with styles or ideas based precisely on these.

A very criticized example in the past was Genshin Impact, Hoyoverse’s (Mihoyo at the time) famous and lucrative open world, compared to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It is certainly very inspired by it visually and in gameplay, and only after a few years of development with new mechanics and game areas (and diminished interest in Zelda) did it shed the label “Clone”. Certainly, the valid criticisms of how The First Descendant copied Destiny 2 are mainly due to the massive return of many players to Bungie’s title, thanks precisely to the launch of The Final Shape on 4th June 2024. We will have to see how Nexon’s F2P will evolve in the future, and especially the response regarding the icons. Although it will probably be resolved behind the scenes and with a likely change of icons in some future patch.
