PlayStation is committed to live-service games going into 2025. Sony’s live service strategy comes after the massive success of Helldivers 2, despite the company also canceling multiple planned live service games.
PlayStation is still focused on live service games, that’s according to CEO Herman Hulst, who has pointed to Helldivers 2 as proof that the strategy is working. Hulst’s comments also come after the closure of Concord, two weeks after the game launched in August.
Hulst spoke to Japanese outlet Famitsu, where he confirmed PlayStation will “continue to focus on developing live service titles along with the story-driven single-player titles that our players want.” PlayStation was reportedly planning 12 before 2026, only for most to be shut down before the end of 2024. Right now, we only know of Fairgame$ and Bungie’s upcoming Marathon that are still planned.

Sony’s Strategic Shift in Live Service Game Development
Despite the scaling back of planned titles, Sony’s commitment to live service games is a way to focus more on high-quality titles. Hulst explained in the interview that PlayStation is “learning a lot.” Although he doesn’t mention specifics, it’s safe to assume that the failed Concord is part of the harsh lessons learned.
By focusing on fewer titles, Sony aims to ensure each game meets the expectations of its player base. Helldivers 2 is the game that proves the strategy can work, and Sony and PlayStation hope that future live service games can hit the same standards and satisfy players.
Anticipated Live Service Titles for PlayStation in 2025
With many reportedly canceled by PlayStation, the two remaining are the upcoming competitive heist shooter Fairgame$ and Bungie’s Marathon. Neither game has a release date, with more information on both expected sometime in 2025.
Live service games are still in demand, with Marvel Rivals another example of how the genre can succeed. There’s still space for live service games, with players more than acceptable to a new title if it’s done well.
Conclusion
PlayStation’s commitment to live service games will see Fairgame$ and Marathon released next. Do you think Sony and PlayStation are doing the right thing? Share your thoughts below.

completely unbelieveable. pushing live service games but most countries can't play em cause PSN account creation is region locked. this is not a good strategy even among hardcore Playstation fans. discord: wolfmaron999
