The Legend of Zelda genre has been part of the gaming industry for a very long time. To be precise, the genre has existed since 1986 when The Legend of Zelda was released for the NES. In this game, you play as Link, not Zelda as some might think. Zelda is the princess who repeatedly receives help from Link.
In the following years, the franchise grew bigger and more games were released. As of now, there are a total of 20 games in the main series, and this year, a new one is coming out, which will be the main focus today.
Let’s also talk about the latest games that have already been released: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. Breath of the Wild was the first Zelda game on the Nintendo Switch and had tremendous success. Fans loved it, which is why Tears of the Kingdom followed. This game is set in the same world but has expanded it further. Flying islands and new cave systems have been added. One of the most impressive features of Tears of the Kingdom from 2023 is that there are practically no loading screens, allowing players to jump from the sky islands to the ground without any loading times. This is especially noteworthy given the age of the Nintendo Switch hardware.
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes was recently announced at Nintendo Direct 2024 on June 18. This game is somewhat different from the last Zelda games. The first major difference in this new main series game is that you do not play as Link, but as Princess Zelda. The art style also differs significantly from the recent games, resembling the remake of Link’s Awakening from 2019. But more on that later.
The game is played from a top-down perspective, quite different from Tears of the Kingdom. Since you no longer play as Link, the combat system has changed significantly. Instead of a sword and shield, you now have a magic wand that allows you to create objects and summon enemies. This opens up new possibilities for combat and exploring the map. We will discuss the map in more detail later. But first, let’s talk a bit about the story.

Let’s start with the story. Mysterious rifts have appeared all over Hyrule, abducting a large part of the population. No one knows where they are now. The well-known hero Link has also fallen victim to this attack. Now you take on the role of Princess Zelda and you want to rescue Link.
You do not have to face this task alone. You get help from the fairy Tri, who equips you with the Tristaff, giving you the ability to create Echoes. With the Echo ability, you can create objects you have previously found in the world. Whether it is a bed, a chest, or a defeated enemy. These objects can be used in combat by throwing them at enemies or solving puzzles. Defeated enemies can be summoned again to fight for you.
Unfortunately, not much more is known about the story at this time, but as Zelda, you will use your new abilities to free Link and uncover the origin of the rifts and likely destroy it.
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom has some similarities to other Zelda games. One similarity we already mentioned is the resemblance to the Link’s Awakening remake from 2019. The art style of the game is the same as in the Link’s Awakening remake, but this is not the only similarity.
In the trailer for Echoes of Wisdom, which you can also see above, there is a scene where Zelda is diving. The perspective changes from the usual top-down view to a 2D view, which we also saw in Link’s Awakening.
But that is not the only Zelda game with which similarities were found. The trailer also shows parts of the map that strongly resemble Zelda A Link to the Past. You can read more about it here.
In Echoes of Wisdom, you do not play as the hero Link as in other main series games, but as Princess Zelda. However, this is not the first time Zelda is a playable character. In some spin-off games, it was already possible to play as her. The first game where you could play as Zelda was Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon in 1993, followed by Zelda’s Adventure in 1996. In both games, you play as Zelda to rescue Link from an evil force.
In 2014, Hyrule Warriors was released. This is a hack-and-slash game from the Dynasty Warriors series set in the world of Hyrule with the well-known characters. In this game, you can play as Zelda, who is equipped with a rapier and light arrows. The game features multiple storylines in which Zelda fights in many battles across Hyrule.
The next game where you can play as Zelda is Cadence of Hyrule from 2019. This game is a crossover of the rhythm game Crypt of the NecroDancer and the Zelda series. In this game, you can switch between Link and Zelda to explore Hyrule, defeat enemies, and solve rhythm-based puzzles.
Although The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom was recently announced, it is set to be released later this year. And the release is not far away. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is set to be released on September 26, 2024. This game will be released exclusively for the Nintendo Switch, but once the Switch 2 is released in the future, a port will likely be available for the new generation.
