People Can Fly, the developer behind Outriders, has confirmed the mysterious Project Maverick is the upcoming Gears of War: E-Day. The next Gears of War entry will release in late 2025 for PC and Xbox series X|S.
Bulletstorm and Outriders developer People Can Fly has confirmed that its mysterious title, codenamed “Project Maverick,” is actually Gears of War: E-Day.
In an update on its “About Us” section on its website, the studio says it is currently working on seven projects, including a new AAA game with Square Enix and a new VR action-survival title.

What Is Gears of War: E-Day?
Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel to the iconic third-person shooter franchise, focusing on its origin story told by series protagonist Marcus Fenix during Emergence Day.
Built from the ground up with UE5, the game will benefit from cutting-edge visuals that will bring the brutal world and savagery of the Locust Horde to life. Developed by The Coalition and People Can Fly, the game will launch in late 2025 for Xbox Series X|S and PC.
Why Was Project Maverick So Mysterious?
People Can Fly revealed Project Maverick in 2023, announcing it as a work-for-hire agreement with Microsoft for one of its existing IPs. It was reported back in 2023 that the project had a budget of between $30m and $50m.
After several months of silence, in January of this year, People Can Fly revealed its partnership with Microsoft and The Coalition to work on Gears of War: E-Day. It has now been confirmed that Project Maverick is this collaboration.
What’s Next For People Can Fly
It’s a busy time for People Can Fly, with the Bulletstorm developer working on seven projects. Among them is a new AAA game they are working on in partnership with Square Enix, an immersive VR title codenamed “Project Bison,” and another VR game titled “Green Hell VR.”
As for Gears of War: E-Day, the game will launch in late 2025 for Xbox Series X|S and PC. The game marks an exciting return for the series, with Gears 5 released back in 2019 and Gears Tactics in 2020.
