Overwatch Classic Brings Back the 2016 Roster – Play the Original Heroes for Limited Time!

Released on 24 May 2024, Overwatch became the defining Hero Shooter of its time. It transformed the gaming landscape with thrilling 6v6 matches, featuring 21 unique characters and 10 maps.

This successful IP revamped the formula first introduced by Team Fortress. It was widely acclaimed and not only received praise but also triggered the Hero Shooter genre boom. However, Blizzard chose to replace the original with Overwatch 2 on 10 August 2023.

Overwatch Classic: Relive the First Overwatch Experience

Blizzard officially announced the release of Overwatch Classic. A new game mode for Overwatch 2 that brings back the first installment’s 2016 experience, specifically capturing the 1.0 version of Overwatch. Here’s what it includes:

Heroes

The 21 Original Heroes, with their launch skills intact. Notably, Cole Cassidy retains the new name instead of the previous McCree.

Maps

The 10 Original Maps, which include the updates and changes introduced with Overwatch 2.

Game Modes

There are 4 modes: Assault, Escort, Hybrid, and Control. Among the maps: Hanamura, Temple of Anubis, Volskaya Industries, Ilios, Lijang Tower, Nepal, Route 66, Watchpoint: Gibraltar, Hollywood, King’s Row, and Numbani.

Gameplay

Gameplay returns to the 6v6 mode with No Hero Limits rules. Ultimate costs revert to their original values, with partial charge retained if interrupted. HP and Damage are adjusted to pre-Overwatch 2: Season 9 levels.

Overwatch Classic: How Long Is It Available and What’s Blizzard Planning?

The Overwatch Classic mode is available from 12 November 2024 until 2 December 2024. This gives players 3 weeks to revisit the nostalgia of the first Overwatch. It’s clearly a strategic choice by Blizzard.

The decision likely comes from strong criticisms Overwatch 2 received after removing the original. It seems Overwatch Classic is a mode to gauge player opinion, and Blizzard may consider offering it as a recurring event or even a permanent mode if it garners the anticipated success and feedback.
