Horror fans are bracing themselves after the news that survival horror Outlast is to get a movie adaptation. Brought to life by Lionsgate, the studio behind the Saw franchise, Outlast will be a collaboration between Lionsgate and Red Barrels, who develop the games.

The first Outlast game was released in 2013, receiving a good reception for its well-crafted atmospheric horror gameplay. 2014 saw the Whistleblower DLC before Outlast 2 came in 2017. More recently, The Outlast Trials expanded the horror universe by switching the series up with an online co-op-focused experience similar to the Saw films.

Known for its spine-chilling environments and relentless scares, Outlast has earned a cult following. It has now captured the imagination of the big screen, with Lionsgate, the studio known for the horror franchise Saw, adapting it into a movie. The adaptation promises to bring the game’s dark asylum and horrific characters to life.

What to Expect from the Outlast Movie

We have no news other than that Roy Lee, the producer of It and Blair Witch, will lead the film adaptation with the help of J. T. Penny, the writer of the Outlast games. It’s unclear whether the film will follow the events of the first Outlast game or the Whistleblower DLC, the prequel to the series.

There is plenty of content for Lionsgate to use, one which Lee acknowledges in a statement seen by Deadline, with Lee saying, “Its deep, emergent lore has provided a perfect foundation for creating a film that delves into the psychological and physical horrors at the core of the franchise.”

Saw Studio’s Influence on the Adaptation

Saw has been an iconic horror film franchise since 2004. With ten films, Saw’s gritty aesthetic and intense narratives could translate perfectly into an Outlast movie adaptation. Fans of both franchises will be hoping for a new series of films that both IPs can be proud of.

Lionsgate and Red Barrels have not shared anything else on the upcoming film. Deadline reveals it will be a “modestly produced feature in the spirit of Five Nights at Freddy’s and Lionsgate’s own The Strangers: Chapter 1 and Saw movies.” Lee says it best when he says the film will be for “psychological and physical” horror fans.
