Sony surprised select PS5 users with a lineup of iconic franchises they can use as animated backgrounds for the console’s welcome tab

April is shaping up to be a massive month for gaming across the board, and we’re only 10 days in. For PlayStation users, this is especially felt today. Not only did Sony reveal a solid lineup for April’s PS Plus Extra Game Catalog which included a rare 2 day-one launches, but now there’s another surprise that has caught the attention of the community: a stealth rollout of animated backgrounds for Playstation 5.
Animated Backgrounds Now Available For Some PS5 Users
Ever since the 25th Anniversary classic themes were pulled, PS5 users have been asking to bring them back. Actually even just themes in general.
And now it looks like Sony may have finally listened… partially. In an unexpected move, a select group of PS5 users have reported receiving a new update that includes animated background options featuring iconic Playstation franchises.
There’s been no official announcement from Sony about the update, making it unclear whether this is a global rollout in progress, a regional test, or some sort of a limited beta phase.
According to reports, 13 franchises are featured in the new animated Welcome Tab backgrounds which can be selected by users if they’re part of the rollout. It’s important to note that these aren’t full system-wide themes like those seen on the PS4 or the classic 25th Anniversary collection. Instead, they appear to only be on the Welcome Tab area of the dashboard. Here’s all 13 titles included in the update:
- Astro Bot
- Days Gone
- Demon’s Souls
- Ghost of Tsushima
- Ghost of Yotei
- God of War Ragnarok
- Horizon: Call of the Wild
- Horizon Forbidden West
- Lego Horizon Adventures
- Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
- Rise of Ronin
- Stellar Blade
- MLB The Show 25

That said, fans have still been excited by the discovery especially since one of the included franchises is Ghost of Yotei, a game that hasn’t even been released or had a launch date confirmed yet. Its inclusion in the lineup adds a layer of mystery and potential hype, possibly teasing upcoming news.
Whether this update is the start of broader customization features or just a limited test, it’s a fun and nostalgic nod to PlayStation’s most celebrated franchises and fans are hoping they won’t have to wait long for wider access.
