Certainly among the major announcements at Gamescom 2024, the reveal of a new Mafia game surprised fans of the series. Titled Mafia: The Old Country, the new chapter will serve as a prequel, taking us to 1900s Sicily. With a 1 minute teaser that does hide many details about the new Mafia chapter.

Mafia: The Old Country presents itself with a cinematic teaser, where a mysterious narrator talks about Cosa Nostra. A criminal organization that does not tolerate mistakes, especially betrayals. With iconographic references related to the religious environment, such as Cain and Abel, The Crucifixion, and an image of Saint Rosalia. The speech evokes the initiation ritual of the pricking, concluding with the mysterious figure observing a city at sunset.


Mafia: The Old Country – Analysis of Hidden Details in the Trailer

Despite the short trailer, there are numerous hidden details, which some fans will surely notice. Among the most notable details are:

  • The location: The city shown at the end perfectly matches San Celeste, the fictional Sicilian city that appeared in Mafia II during the first chapter. It’s also the birthplace of Thomas Angelo from the first Mafia game.
  • The religious images: The closeness of religion to organized crime in the 1900s is well-known. The teaser reminds us of this by showing religious representations of Cain’s betrayal, the first traitor according to the Bible, The Crucifixion of Jesus and Saint Rosalia. The latter being patron saint of Palermo, close to a typical stiletto used in the initiation ritual to join the “family”.


Mafia: The Old Country – Release Date and Fan Expectations

The announcement of Mafia: The Old Country has definitely surprised many fans of the series, who are eager to get their hands on a true prequel. A chapter that takes place where it all began. Hangar 13 also recently confirmed on the franchise’s Twitter (X) page that the game will include Sicilian voice acting to stay true to the theme, along with 6 other confirmed languages, as well as various languages for the UI and text. But fans will have to wait a while for the release date, expected in 2025. However, the teaser already confirms further news arriving in December 2024, likely including the release date and a game showcase.
