Little Nightmares III is technically the 4th installment of the series, now developed by Supermassive Games
The game is set to release in 2024, with previous title released in February 2021
The new title will feature two new characters, Low & Alone and online co-op option.
Little Nightmares was born as an indie title by the indie studio Tarsier Studios back in 2017, a title that received a massive positive reception. In tune with many of the award winning indies that appeared in that period (such as Limbo and Inside). Little Nightmares is an adventure puzzle and platform game, set in a psychological horror and creepy environment, where we play as a helpless kid trying to escape the place alive.
What soon attracted the attention was the rather polished visual and sound design combined with the relatively interesting world building. Resulting in the sequel, Little Nightmares II, expanding upon its predecessor and offering an AI companion. Announced at Gamescom 2023, Little Nightmares III offers a new adventure and a brand new experience to be played with a friend online.
About the developers
Little Nightmares is an IP owned by Bandai Namco Entertainment and was developed by Tarsier Studio, a relatively small studio that worked under Bandai. Though referred to as an indie studio, it’s a rather debated situation considering Bandai’s importance in the videogame market. That said, the studio was later acquired back in late 2019 by Embracer Group, which is currently having financial issues, leaving behind the series after completing Little Nightmares II.
They also left lore, drafts and materials regarding the series, allowing Bandai to continue the project by hiring Supermassive Games, known for Until Dawn, the Quarry and especially The Dark Picture Anthology which they worked for Bandai themselves.
Story
The game will feature a new cast of characters, the duo of Low and Alone, the young boy wearing a blue cape and a Raven mask and the girl with pigtails wearing a lime hazmat suit and an aviator mask with goggles. Taking place in a new area of The Nowhere, the two of them decide to escape the place known as The Spiral.
Consisting of the confirmed location of The Necropolis, the very first area of the game consisting of a desert and the ruined city, The Fun Fair an infested fair with various stands and stalls, and the The Factory a factory that seemingly used to produce lollipops as the red sludge can be seen scattered in the place.
Gameplay showcase
On 27 October, Bandai released an 18 minutes length gameplay video showing some of the early sections of the game in co-op. We can see the duo sneaking into The Necropolis, with Alone being able to break thin walls thanks to her wrench, and a bit later Low showing his archery skills to fell a hanging crate. As well as defend themselves from smaller enemies, being able to stun some beetles with arrows and finish them off with the wrench.
Of course having access to 2 characters, puzzles are designed with cooperation in mind. And an action in the form of a call to grab the other player’s attention.Later the duo find some dandelion looking umbrella, used to climb on air currents. Ending the video with the nightmarish “Monster Baby” catching the duo, only to reveal that it was a nightmare. Or was it?
