Doom Eternal

Although Bethesda already announced that a sequel to the 2016 reboot of Doom was in the works, they saved Doom Eternal’s grand reveal for this year’s QuakeCon. If you’re excited to get back to eviscerating demons and splatering blood and innards all over the place, here’s everything we know so far about id Software’s fast-paced shooter.

Gameplay Preview

Game director Marty Stratton and creative director Hugo Martin took the stage during the Quakecon 2018 keynote for the game’s grand reveal. Juicy details aside, the best part of their presentation has got to be when fans got their first look at how the sequel will play. You can checkout the gameplay reveal below:

Beefed Up!

Bethesda says they want players to feel powerful in the game, and that led them to redesign Doomguy’s armor. Now, the protagonist is looking buffer than ever and has received two new built-in armaments – a retractable hand blade and what appears to be a shoulder flamethrower. But even with the beefed up armor, the Demon Slayer still manages to move as fast as before, maybe even faster.

Hell on Earth

While the last game was set on Mars, the sequel will be set right here on Earth, albeit with hell pouring in. The gameplay reveal showed lava pits right smack in the middle of fallen bridges and destroyed buildings. It also showed wider levels

Demons, Demons, Demons!

To the delight of fans, creative director Hugo Martin revealed that the sequel will have twice as many demons as the 2016 reboot. Now, it wasn’t clear whether that meant the game would have double the enemy types, or if it would throw twice the number of demons at the player.

We already saw Pain Elementals, Imps, Spiderdemons and Hell Knights from the trailer, but Bethesda also showed Arachnotrons, the Arch-vile and the Marauder at QuakeCon. Except for the skull-topped double axe it was wielding, the Marauder seems like it was designed to look like the Slayer, and Bethesda is teasing that “there’s a story behind that.”

Destructible Demons

Another new feature coming to the sequel is something id Software is dubbing as “destructible demons”. We saw parts and chunks of demons chipped away as the Slayer blasted them with his arsenal. This adds nicely to the game’s gore and makes shooting away at the demons all the more satisfying.

Bring Out the Big Guns

id Software’s Marty Stratton and Hugo Martin also showed some concept art for the Slayers new gear. We saw a new retractable arm blade, the Ballista which can be used to impale demons with explosive bolts, and the new Super Shotgun with its “meat hook” attachment. The latter is like a grappling hook that players can shoot at enemies to pull themselves towards the enemy for an up-close-and-personal shotgun spray. It also seems like a nifty new tool for traversal.

Beware of Invaders

id Software is adding a bit of replayability to the game by giving players the ability to “invade” other players’ campaigns. Taking on the form of demons, players can either take on the Slayer solo or form a “slayer hunting party” to take down the main player of the campaign. Players have full control of whether they want to allow invaders into their game or not, or if they want to be the invader themselves. id has also confirmed that this will not be the only form of multiplayer in the game.

What’s next after hell?

Game director Marty Stratton told Polygon at QuakeCon 2018 that their team is preparing singleplayer DLC for the game. He says that they are happy that people are still playing the last game, but says they want to give players more reasons to come back to the next game.

Doom Universe

Although Doom has never had much in terms of story and lore, it looks like id Software is set to change that with this next entry. At QuakeCon 2018, Marty Stratton said, “We’re not just making a Doom game anymore, we’re building a Doom universe.” The devs also showed off concept art of the game’s different locations, and it’ll definitely be exciting to see some sort of story to unfold in each one.

When will all hell break loose on Earth?

Although id Software and Bethesda has revealed a whole lot about the upcoming shooter, one thing they did leave out is when exactly we’ll be able to get our hands on it. Frankly, we’re hoping it see it out next year. We do know, however, that the game will be launching on PC, Xbox One, PS4 and Switch.

And that’s about it. Bethesda and id Software will most likely reveal more as development progresses. We’ll keep you updated as the details trickle in.
