GTA 5 Sales Approach 200 Million, Will GTA 6 Top It?

It’s undeniable the huge success and influence over the gaming industry that Rockstar had with their Grand Theft Auto series, one that continues to this day with the now decade old GTA V. But don’t be fooled, the game is still extremely popular to this day, with not only being consistently among the most played titles on Steam, but even receiving a next gen update on the current console with the ray tracing reflection implementation. And to top it all off the game is now nearing the 200 Million copies sold mark.

GTA V has been around not for just 10 years but it has been released on the 3 whole generation of consoles, being launched near the end of the 7th gen consoles (Xbox 360 and PS3), improved on the 8th gen (PS4 and Xbox One) with its current version on the 9th gen (PS5 and Xbox Series X/S)

This combined with an impressive world created by the hands of the team at Rockstar as well as a sandbox experience for the massively popular Online, has allowed the game to not only climb the charts quickly, but it’s a trend that doesn’t seem to stop after all these years. Now securing its place in the current 2nd place as the best selling video games ever, behind Minecraft at around 300 Millions copies sold.

GTA 6 on the Horizon

In the meanwhile, among the storm of the latest GTA 6 News, finally Rockstar has broken the silence with a recent tweet on Twitter (or X). Announcing December as the 25th Anniversary of Rockstar Games, thanking the community. And most importantly officially announcing that in December they’ll release the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto. Gathering over 150 millions views, 1 millions likes and half a million retweets.

GTA 6 expectations

While Rockstar Games is certainly leaving the chance to the announcement not being about GTA 6 mentioning a “next Grand Theft Auto”. It’s  undeniable that from the get go GTA 6 has a big hurdle to overcome in the popularity of its predecessor. Not only must it compete and completely overshadow its predecessor in every major aspect, visuals, gameplay, interactivity etc. but also offer real innovations to capture the hearts of fans and newcomers.

Being compared to a fully fleshed game that had years to mature but did technically release 10 years ago is not a simple task. That’s also why some developers decided to not proceed with a sequel or a new entry, and those who did had to bear the consequences of not living up to expectation. A thing that Rockstar Games is certainly aware of and is confident

GTA IV sale and new Challenges in GTA Online

Currently Rockstar Games is running a promotion on GTA IV: The Complete Edition, which not only includes the base game but also the additional episodes The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony in a single package. 

And in the meanwhile GTA Online is running a new Challenge with new rewards to unlock. The New Collective Sprunk & eCola Challenge and Simeon’s Employee of the Month Challenge.
