Santa Monica Studio has finally announced a new update for God of War Ragnarök. A patch that brings some community-requested changes—here’s what’s new.

God of War Ragnarök (GoWR) is the latest entry in Santa Monica Studio’s acclaimed action series. A mythological-themed action-adventure franchise where players control Kratos. This sequel continues the story of God of War (2018), a soft reboot of the series.

Ragnarok takes place three years after the previous game, continuing the Norse mythology setting. Originally released on PlayStation on November 9, 2022, it arrived on PC on September 19, 2024. The game received high praise from fans on launch and similar success with the PC port.

Santa Monica Studio confirmed the new update will launch on January 29, 2025, mainly focusing on customization changes in God of War Ragnarök.

The update became available on January 30 and applies to all game versions. Additionally, it introduces a major change for the PC version concerning PSN.

God of War Ragnarok: What’s Changed and What’s New

As mentioned, customization changes now allow players to use the Transmog System without restrictions. This feature is available from the start of the game. Additionally, PS4 and PS5 players can access the Armor of the Black Bear Set from the first chest without needing a NG+ playthrough. The set includes:

• Cloak of the Black Bear (Chest)
• Wraps of the Black Bear (Wrist)
• Belt of the Black Bear (Waist)

On PC, the set is available as a bonus for linking a PlayStation Network account, granting an additional 500 Hacksilver and 250 XP. Alternatively, players can unlock it by starting a NG+ playthrough. The most significant change is that PSN login is now completely optional on PC.

Conclusion

A small but impactful first update of 2025 for God of War Ragnarök, allowing immediate access to the Black Bear Set. More importantly, it removes the PlayStation Network requirement on PC—something many players had demanded.

PlayStation’s controversial decision had frustrated many players, especially in 2024, as the PSN-supported regions excluded a significant portion of the audience. Requiring PSN access even for offline, single-player games like GoW had been a major concern, making it impossible to play in case of network issues.
