FORSPOKEN GRAPHICS FEATURES
Forpsoken lead graphics programmer Keiji Matsuda has spoken at GDC 2022 about the RPG’s use of ray tracing.
Forspoken uses Luminous Productions’ own Luminous Engine, and according to Matsuda, the company worked hard on tweaking the engine’s global illumination.
That includes Reverse-Z, a technique that draws distant objects in the correct order.
Matsuda puts a lot of emphasis on Forspoken’s ray-traced shadows and ambient occlusion.
According to Matsuda, the ray tracing techniques implemented allow them to “create shadows that are sharper, cleaner, and of higher quality than shadows created with shadow maps in the past.”
Of course, ray tracing is only possible with the latest hardware, so you’ll need a PS5 or powerful PC to take advantage of Forspoken’s impressive graphics.
If graphics don’t matter to you and you want a stable frame rate, the PS5 version features three display modes.
The PS5 version has a performance mode that runs the game at 1440p 60 FPS, a graphics mode that sets the game at 4K 30 FPS, and a ray tracing mode.
Forspoken releases on October 11, although rumors suggest the game could receive another delay if Square Enix chooses to release Final Fantasy 16 this year.
