Dune: Awakening Gameplay Premiere – Watch 26 Minutes from Gamescom 2024

Revealed during the Opening Night Live at Gamescom 2024 with a gameplay trailer, Dune: Awakening returns on the opening day of the event. With a 26-minute gameplay showcase, it provides an in-depth look at what Arrakis has in store for players in this new MMO from Funcom.


Dune: Awakening – The Gameplay Presentation at Gamescom

At the ONL of Gamescom on 20 August, Funcom presented a roughly 5-minute trailer showcasing the gameplay of Dune: Awakening. Briefly highlighting the main features of their new survival MMO based on Frank Herbert’s novels. With direct inspiration from Denis Villeneuve’s recent films. However, Funcom has also released a 26-minute video on the opening day to better analyze the main features of Dune: Awakening.


Dune: Awakening – Highlights of the 26-Minute Gameplay

The Funcom team presents a lengthy video showcasing the main features of Dune: Awakening and the choices made by the team to balance gameplay while respecting the lore. The breakdown is as follows:

  • Character Creation and Prologue: The character creation, where the choice of Mentor impacts our initial skills. The prologue takes place in a cave, where we learn the game controls.
  • First Steps: After our Ornithopter breaks down, we are shown the survival aspect of Dune. With need of water, the intense sun of Arrakis, Sandworms, and exposure to Melange to keep in mind.
  • NPC Bases and Combat: A large portion of third-person combat is displayed. Dune: Awakening is primarily a third-person shooter, but melee weapons will have a certain impact.
  • Base Building and Crafting: Typical base creation, but crafting larger objects requires crafting each part individually.
  • World Events and Player Hubs: There will be many random events in the game world, attracting players’ attention for loot. Cities like Harko will also serve as hubs for players seeking guilds and companions.
  • Testing Stations and Spice Hunt: Testing Stations will be dungeons with loot at the end. Meanwhile, the Spice Hunt represents the endgame, where a Melange explosion triggers massive player conflicts, as it is a vital resource.

Expectations for Dune: Awakening and New Information

A very comprehensive gameplay showcase that, while interesting to many, has also attracted some criticism. The biggest concern is that melee combat is not emphasized enough in Dune: Awakening, leaning more towards being a shooter. Additionally, there’s concern about PvP, where access to Spice for solo or small group players might be nearly impossible, forcing them to seek guilds right from the start. Nonetheless, Funcom has plenty of new content planned to show before launch, with many eagerly awaiting an Open Beta. There’s also the announcement of a release planned for early 2025 on PC, and by the end of 2025 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
