With its enchanting visuals and immersive gameplay, Sea of Stars is sure to be a hit with RPG fans everywhere.
With great respect for classic games, Sabotage Studio is preparing a new retro title - Sea of Stars. This turn-based RPG with pixel graphics is a homage to the old games of this genre. The design is so adorable that it instantly makes you want to explore it further. In fact, Nintendo users who are eager to try out the game can already download the demo from the Official Store. But Seas of Stars is captivating not only for its style, but also for the richness of its storyline and the variety of its gameplay elements. If you've had enough of running and fighting, you can simply go fishing, sailing, or do something else to unwind. With all these features in mind, I can say that this JRPG has a great chance of success.
Retro atmosphere Sea of Stars is a 2D pixel RPG with turn-based combat. You take control of 2 brothers who combine the powers of the sun and moon to defeat enemies led by an alchemist, "the fleshmancer". The game has a substantial lifespan, with an adventure divided into several distinct arcs, in a fantasy-oriented world. There's more than just the mainland to explore, as the game also includes islands that can be sailed. A number of secondary activities, such as fishing, cooking or spending time in taverns, provide a fun break between 2 quests. Sea of Stars seems to combine all the ingredients of a good oldschool RPG.
Sea of Stars is a pretty ambitious title from the indie developers of Sabotage Studio, with their 2018's The Messenger as their only title, a game that attracted a lot of attention and was well received, as a metroidvania inspired by the classic Ninja Gaiden games. In this case Sea of Stars, is instead heavily inspired by the likes of Chrono Trigger and a bit of the Mario RPG games. In this turn based RPG we'll take control of two characters, known as Children of the Solstice, bearing the power of the moon and the sun necessary to perform the Eclipse Magic, the only force able to repel the The Fleshmancer's evil creatures. In this old-school like game, we'll thus explore the game world across a beatifully rendered game world in a 16bit style of graphics while not only sporting a lot of attention to details, with moving grass, animated sprites, but also with a very clever usage of dynamic light creating a rather charming old but new looks, as if you'd be looking at an old game through nostalgia glasses. Gameplay is turn based as classic RPGs and the battle will transition when we approach or attack the enemy visible, battling in the same place. The battle itself is very reminescent of classic titles but also sports the timing feature of the Mario RPG, allowing to deal more damage when pressing the attack button at the right time, and being able to reduce damage and recover mana when pressing it during an enemy attack. With plenty of characters to meet and greet, several story arcs and secondary missions and plenty of heartwarming moments, thanks to also the Campire system thanks to which we can cook, rest but also interact with other characters and learn more about them and the world lore. But there are also other side-activities to do during your adventure, from cooking to sailing, as well as fishing in a pretty well done mini-game. All in all Sea of Stars seems to be a solid experience, with a captivating style , gorgeous visuals and a good story, albeit the two main characters aren't all that charismatic and feels a bit boring when compared to the various character you'll meet in your journey. Funded via kickstarter the game has not only reached its goal but also got further tiers, with future updates to come, of which one include a Single Player+ with a co-op experience it seems. The price should be around 30€, with probably 35€ (the base kickstarter tier) for a deluxe with the digital artbook, so for now it's a waiting game, especially as the developer promised to finally release the demo on pc in summer, hopefully before the launch at the end of August.
