Fight your way through swarms of crazed monsters, either alone or with companions to escape a chaotic alien world. Combine items in peculiar ways and master each character to be the disaster you dreaded after your initial crash landing.

• Survive the alien world: There are over a dozen painstakingly constructed areas to explore, each filled with formidable bosses and difficult enemies that you will fight to prevent you from surviving and escaping.
• Acquire powerful items: Each run is kept interesting and challenging by more than 110 items. The more items you accumulate, the more powerful and unpredictable they are.
• You’ll also learn more about the lore and strategies from the logs as you come across lots of items.
• Unlock new ways to play: Unlock eleven playable survivors, each of whom has a distinct fighting style and talents. Toggle gameplay modifications like friendly fire, random survivor spawning, item choices, and more by learning the artifacts’ secrets. No run is ever the same because of the randomly generated levels, monsters, and items.
• Play solo or co-op: Take on the journey by yourself, or online with up to three people, or competing in the Prismatic Trials’ recurring challenge. Alongside established survivors like the Engineer, Huntress, and, of course, the Commando, there are also brand-new survivors called the Captain and MUL-T.

These combinations of abilities build into explosive chaos and seemingly infinite replayability — at least if you’re playing with friends. Risk of Rain 2 is a lonely experience when played solo, and while ability cool downs never feel too prohibitive, being able to exchange which of your squad is unleashing all manner of hell on an enemy is a big part of the fun and strategy.

Risk of Rain 2 might just be one of the PlayStation 4’s most addictive co-op experiences. Crash-landing on a hostile planet littered with sparsely detailed but highly stylised landmarks and architecture, you and your team must survive using weapons and abilities that are in constant flux as you slot in more and more perks. It sounds simple, and at first it feels that way — akin to playing laser tag against overwhelming odds, such is the deceptively basic (yet responsive) way that starting out each run feels.
