Railway Empire is a train sim game that ticks a lot of boxes for fan of the genre. Gaming Minds Studios after 5 years from the release of the first game, has brought several improvements both visually, but especially on the gameplay and quality of life features, which seems to simplify but also allow better customization.
First of all the title will feature a campaign, set in the early 1800s, where we’ll take the role of a young entrepreneur among a varied cast of characters, each with their own set of bonus as well as malus, making each experience different (at least in the beginning). We’ll thus have to grow as a railway company into the greatest, by beating the other competitors in the scene. At our disposal we’ll have 60 of the most iconic trains of the period, each beautifully recreated both externally and internally, with explorable wagons. All across a huge game map, which features not only the American continent, but also the Continental Europe.
Several are the improvements built upon the predecessor, with some automated constructions which allow us to focus on the main task, like signals now are automatically placed when building railroads. Not to mention the stations can now host up to 8 different lines, as well as 4 lines on both galleries and bridges. Twice the amount of the first game, which its limit caused a lot of overbuilding of structures and complicated placements. There’s also a visual improvement, which is also reflected by the ability to visit the wagons during the train operations, although it’s more on the lighter upgrade, something that can be noted but hard to pinpoint, a welcomed addition nonetheless. Not to mention the presence of multiplayer in co-op, to play together with your friends.
All in all, it’s a pretty fun title despite the niche genre, but has enough content and polish to interest a more broader userbase who could give this title a try, especially for those who had some fun with Transport Fever and want more train focused content.
