Final Fantasy 13 is an action JRPG developed by Square Enix, the thirteenth game in the mainline series. A deepening crisis threatens to plunge the floating world of cocoon into chaos, and a band of human strangers find themselves branded enemies of the state. Join them on a desperate quest to challenge the forces controlling their fate and prevent untold destruction.

• Command Synergy Battle is the battle system for Final Fantasy 13 players control one character and issue commands from a menu to fill their ATB gauges, with the computer controlling the other two party members.
• The Crystarium system can be used to purchase stat boosts, spells, and other abilities for your characters. The skills you learn affect what other skills you can have learning Fire, for example, opens a skill path that leads to Fira and other spells.
• Each character has eight base weapons, most of which can be found, and all of which can be purchased at Retail Network. The base weapons can be upgraded to a unique second stage, and eventually to their third and ultimate stage.

Those sitting on the fence about this game should approach it with an open mind and a willingness to embrace change. Final Fantasy has never been “final” about its characters and worlds as the series is always on the move. In this case, Final Fantasy XIII is not perfect but it stands firmly as one of Square Enix’s finest masterpieces.

GAME OVER

Final Fantasy XIII is an excellent game regardless of what system you’re playing on. However, the Xbox 360 version’s graphics are a few steps behind, with noticeable compression in the cutscenes and less impressive lighting. It’s enough for me to recommend the PS3 version if you have the option, but 360 gamers shouldn’t feel too slighted; the visuals are still good, and even without installing, I didn’t encounter any major hiccups in performance.

Game Informer

If you’re coming into this with the hopes of seeing the story turn itself around, then you’re going to leave disappointed. But if you enjoyed the refinements made in Final Fantasy XIII-2, then I think you’ll find a lot to love about Lightning Returns.
