Taking place after the events of Dark Advent, the unwilling her Fang returns in Refrain Chord, along with his partner Fairy Eryn and the young Tiara with the objective of finding more Furies, the Fairy imbued weapons, in order to revive the Goddess and foil the plans of the revival of the Vile God.
In this journey we’ll be reintroduced to the colored cast encountered from the two previous titles, along with a pletora of new characters. From which in this new title, the women called Muse take an important role. These Muse are women able to heal injuries or even brainwash others thanks to the power of their voice, through songs. Songs that will also play a role in the gameplay.
Gameplay that has received a radical shift of genre, moving from the classic JRPG turn based combat onto the grid based tactical one, where we’ll deploy our Fencers in a grid based map similar to the likes of Fire Emblem. Taking a lot of elements typical of the genre, like positioning and terrain in consideration, on top of the returning multi hit moves like Avalanche attacks and Fairize mode, where our Fencer will be able to resonate with their Furies, receiving great boost to their stats. Not only our Fencer will gain experience, but also Furies becoming stronger and unlocking new options for their respective weapons. While Furies will take an important role gameplay wise, it’s still possible buying regular weapon through the game shop. On top of that the previously mentioned Muse, the new interesting unit of this entry, will play the role of caster, being able to cast beneficial effects through their song, for a certain amount of turn and or based on the proximity of the caster. if an enemy Muse song will overlap the area with ours, an occurrence named Dramatic Resonance, boosting both negative and positive effects to a further degree.
So, despite the genre change the game is still a continuation of the previous titles, but while useful it’s not completely important picking previous title to learn who is who, as the several slice of life events and character re-introduction will help that. Narration will take a huge role in the game, with lots of dialogues and little bits of sol, gag and light toned scenes. A bit hard to swallow is the price bump, especially considering Fairy Fencer was never a AAA title, hopefully it will come down in price.
