It’s thanks to you, the fans of his work, that Akira Toriyama was able to do what he loved most for over 45 years, which was to creatively work on his projects. In these many years, Akira Toriyama has left us with some unforgettable works, ensuring that he will hopefully never be forgotten.
Akira Toriyama’s most famous work is probably the Dragon Ball manga and its accompanying anime, which he wrote over many years. In total, he wrote 519 chapters with more than 8000 pages of his Dragon Ball series. The manga alone has sold over 156 million copies in Japan and 230 million copies worldwide, making it the second best-selling manga globally.
His manga was animated into an anime just two years after its inception. The Dragon Ball series received 153 episodes. But it didn’t end there; 3 more series were produced as sequels, resulting in a total of 639 episodes. However, it wasn’t just limited to anime. Video games were also developed based on the Dragon Ball franchise.
The video games began in 1986 with Dragon Ball: Dragon Daihikyō released on September 27 in Japan for the Super Cassette Vision. From 1986 to 1993, 8 games were released for the NES, but only one made it to Europe and America. From 1992 to 1996, 7 games were developed for the Super Nintendo, with 4 eventually reaching Europe after a few years.
The latest game is Dragon Ball: The Breakers, released in 2022. However, this is not the end; even after Akira Toriyama’s passing, more games will follow. Currently, Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is in development. In total, 101 games have been developed, including arcade and mobile games, based on the Dragon Ball universe.
However, well-known game series such as Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger are also based on Akira Toriyama’s works. On April 24, 2024, a game called Sand Land will be released, also based on a manga by Akira Toriyama, which is significantly shorter and less popular with only 14 chapters.
